Description

The Department of Chemistry and Physical Science and the Department of Engineering (ABET accredited) invite applications for a tenure track position as Assistant/Associate Professor. The department seeks a candidate with teaching and/or research experience in chemical engineering, chemistry, and physics, as well as the ability to supervise undergraduate student research. Candidates with experience in any of these areas are invited to apply, and this is not meant to limit applicants to any particular subdiscipline.Teaching responsibilities are based on departmental, and curriculum needs each year and encompass lecture and some laboratory courses. These include Calculus-Based Physics I and II, Chemical Process Principles, Transport Processes I and II, Chemical Engineering Analysis and Lab, Chemical Reactor Design and Analysis, and an occasional General Chemistry I or II.

Candidates will be involved in developing the chemical engineering curriculum as this is a new program. Faculty members are expected to teach in the Methodist University core curriculum, mentor students, and participate in institutional service and the academic governance of the department, college, and university.Additionally, faculty members are encourage to develop and maintain research projects involving undergraduate students.We seek candidates whose teaching, research, and/or service has prepared them to address chemistry in the context of social responsibility, contribute to our ongoing efforts at engagement and inclusion of culturally diverse audiences in STEM and higher education, support departmental efforts to improve student career readiness, and add to ongoing efforts to increase the preparation, retention, and persistence of students in STEM.

Academic rank and salary are commensurate with level of education as well as professional and academic experience. Candidates should be interested in curriculum design and evaluation.

Candidates will initially submit the following:(1) cover letter summarizing interests and qualifications;(2) curriculum vitae;(3) teaching statement describing teaching experience and philosophy, the teaching and learning pedagogies utilized, and also describe how your experience will support your teaching of our courses.
(4) statement of research interests describing potential research projects involving undergraduate students in any area of chemical engineering or chemistry and your ability to mentor undergraduate research projects in these areas.

(5) a concise equity and diversity statement about teaching or other experiences, successes, and challenges in working with a diverse student population

(6) contact information for three references.Application review will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. This position is conditional based upon budgetary approval. Anticipated start date is August 1, 2024.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related field by the start date.
  • Teaching and/or research experience in the areas of physics, chemical engineering, and/or general chemistry.
  • Commitment to inclusive pedagogy and teaching excellence.
  • Ability to teach Calculus-Based Physics I and II, Chemical Process Principles, Transport Processes I and II, Chemical Engineering Analysis and Lab, Chemical Reactor Design and Analysis, and General Chemistry I or II. Instruction includes both the lecture and sometimes the accompanying lab.
  • Ability to guide and mentor student research in chemical engineering based projects.
