Job Overview

The Assistant Director of Engineering plays a crucial role in the daily operations of the Engineering department, working closely with the Director of Engineering to develop and implement strategies and services that meet the needs of owners, employees, and guests. This position is responsible for ensuring efficient administration and management of all property operations and maintenance functions, while also monitoring customer satisfaction, completion of projects, revenue and market share goals, employee satisfaction, and hotel financial goals.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor at all times, fostering a positive work environment.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and teamwork with colleagues and other departments within the hotel/restaurant.
  • Adhere to all standards of operations, policies, and procedures, and promote compliance among team members.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategies and operations for the Engineering department.
  • Experience in assisting in leading and executing an efficient and productive preventative maintenance system.
  • Organize, schedule, and oversee minor repairs across the building, collaborating with various disciplines including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and aesthetics.
  • Assess proactive and reactive mechanical needs, determine appropriate repair strategy, and assist in selecting vendors and contractors to complete work.
  • Assist in establishing and executing a preventative maintenance program to ensure all areas and machinery are serviced and updated according to schedule.
  • Monitor status regularly and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Assist in developing a plan for completing routine maintenance and renovations, coordinating work with department managers.
  • Identify and select vendors as appropriate.
  • Assist in creating a safe environment for guests and employees by ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Serve as a project coordinator for hotel renovations, liaising with corporate technical services, architects, licensing agencies, contractors, and hotel management.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards by meeting with inspectors and taking corrective actions as needed.
  • Keep all mechanical, electrical, and structural blueprints up to date.
  • Assist in controlling labor and operating expenses through effective scheduling, budgeting, purchasing decisions, and inventory control.
  • Assist in interviewing, selecting, training, managing, and scheduling personnel within the Engineering team.
  • Monitor and assist in developing employee performance, conducting counseling, evaluations, and delivering recognition and rewards.
  • Ensure staff understands their job expectations before holding them accountable.
  • Maintain awareness of documentation needed and retained in employee files.
  • Be familiar with all safety and emergency procedures, including OSHA requirements.
  • Attend relevant meetings as required.

Reports directly to: Director of Engineering

Knowledge, Requirements and Skills

  • Engineering or Hotel degree required
  • At least three (3) years’ relevant experience required
  • Strong proficiency in using MS Office (MS Excel and MS PowerPoint, in particular).
  • Experience with payroll control, scheduling, and P&L management.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent reading, writing, and oral proficiency in the English Language.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Bilingual (English – Spanish) preferred.
  • Ability to multitask, work well under pressure, and be a team player.

Working Conditions/Environment

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • The person having this responsibility may have to lift up to 30lbs on an occasional basis
  • The person having this position may have to sit for eight (8) hours, stand and/or walk, push, kneel, bend, balance, squat, reach and stretch for one (1) hour per day
