Meta is Hiring a Research Scientist, Civil Rights in Technology Near Washington, DC

Meta’s Civil Rights Team seeks an experienced, highly motivated Research Scientist to join the Team’s technology pillar. In particular, you’ll help the Civil Rights Team measure and mitigate potential civil rights risks in emerging technologies (such as virtual reality and facial recognition), specifically with respect to algorithms, machine learning and artificial intelligence. You will enjoy working with some of the richest data sets in the world, cutting-edge technology, and the ability to see your insights turned into real world impact. The position requires an interest in civil rights issues and the impacts of technology and social media on individuals, communities, and society.A successful candidate is excited by taking on and leading complex and cutting-edge projects, thrives in a fast-paced environment and can seamlessly drive success working with multiple cross-functional stakeholders. You must be a self-starter, able to identify issues early and drive to resolution independently. The perfect candidate will have both excellent quantitative and communication skills and have demonstrated success in analyzing datasets to power and influence business decisions.

Research Scientist, Civil Rights in Technology Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with a variety of technical and non-technical stakeholders (including engineers, data scientists, and attorneys) to understand and identify data needs, understand civil rights risks and business problems, and design analytical solutions
  • Collaborate with researchers, product managers, policy managers, and engineers to research and develop potential measurements and mitigations to address civil rights risks in cutting-edge technologies
  • Build data expertise and leverage data controls to ensure privacy, security, compliance, data quality, and operations for allocated areas of ownership
  • Lead the measurement, analysis, and interpretation of results from data requirement gathering, to modeling, and recommendations for civil rights concerns, under direction of counsel
  • Design and communicate analytics, experiments, and software solutions to help drive understanding across some of the largest data sets in the world
  • Show scientific rigor in conducting applied research
  • clearly articulate why a chosen approach is superior to others
  • Contribute to development of documentation, protocols and procedures, training guides, workflows, etc.
  • Identify new relevant opportunities
  • Contribute to internal and external publications and presentations to share the Team’s innovative and impactful work
  • Support other Civil Rights Team engagements and strategic projects

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Political Science, Sociology, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 3 years of work experience in data or quantitative field
  • Experience with SQL, ETL, data modeling, and at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R, C , C#, Scala, etc.)
  • Experience writing persuasive reports and crafting presentation decks
  • Experience with distributed computing (Hive/Hadoop)
  • Experience with machine learning to automate tasks, identify patterns, make predictions
  • Experience using version control systems (e.g. Git/Mercurial)
  • Experience visualizing data (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI, D3)
  • Experience working with non-technical partners
  • Experience initiating and driving projects to completion with minimal guidance
  • Experience working cross-functionally and communicating technical content to general audiences, and communicating policy concepts to technical audiences

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD or JD
  • 5 years of work experience in data or quantitative field
  • Experience working in technology industry
  • Experience identifying and addressing civil rights issues across protected classes
  • Experience with Hive, Presto/SQL, Spark, and Source Control (Git/Mercurial)
  • Experience writing and editing academic publications
