Met Council is Hiring a Volunteer Coordinator Near New York, NY

Met Council is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. We fight poverty through comprehensive social services and by treating each client with compassion, integrity, and respect. Our programs are staffed by experts who help over 325,000 clients each year and advocate on behalf of all needy New Yorkers. Our services include 100% affordable housing at 21 locations, family violence program, Holocaust survivor assistance, geriatric social work, crisis intervention and the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of 120 food pantries, affordable housing sites, and JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York City.

Position Summary:

The Volunteer Services Department supports Met Council’s greater mission of delivering best-in-class social services to New York City’s most vulnerable populations with dignity and respect. Our volunteers and donors provide programmatic support to expand Met Council’s core services, all under the banner of service learning, poverty education, community outreach, engagement, and philanthropy. The agency benefits from the support of volunteers and donors who fulfill mission-driven critical needs; while volunteers and donors benefit from meaningful, informative service experiences that provide tangible support to our agency, our clients, and the greater New York City community. Ultimately, volunteers and donors experience the impact of their time, efforts, and philanthropy for the purpose of furthering the development of the organization.

The Volunteer Coordinator supports the department’s Senior Director on the recruitment, placement, training, management, departure, and tracking of volunteers and donors. The Volunteer Coordinator will work to further Met Council’s impact on alleviating poverty in NYC by energizing volunteers and donors through both direct and indirect service and giving. The role will require the coordinator to split their time and be stationed at both the Brooklyn Hub (Boro Park, Brooklyn) and Met Council Headquarters (Financial District).

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Supports volunteer engagement at Met Council’s Brooklyn Hub (50%) and horizontally across all other programs (50%).
  • Coordinates Met Council volunteer opportunities for both individuals and groups.
  • Conducts outreach to local community organizations in the neighborhoods of Boro Park and Bensonhurst, in addition to the surrounding areas.
  • Engages new and existing volunteers and donors from the recruitment and onboarding stage.
  • Manages Met Council’s Volunteer Management Software “Bloomerang.”
  • Attends, facilitates, and executes volunteer and donor events both on and off-site.
  • Assists with converting volunteers into Met Council donors through means such as event support, direct mailings and communications, administrative tasks, and special projects.
  • Coordinates additional scheduling, projects, and support to the Senior Director and larger department, as needed.
  • Handles communication and correspondence with volunteers and donors regarding logistics.
  • Maintains and develops relationships with volunteers, donors, and community partners (JCC’s, Synagogues, Interfaith organizations, schools, corporations, etc.).
  • Oversees data collection regarding volunteer participation and in-kind donations and ensures that volunteer and donor information is inputted accurately for reporting purposes.
  • Maintains knowledge around anti-poverty measures, food insecurity, and access to governmental benefits, and additional offered by Met Council.
  • Collaborates with different departments throughout the agency to meet needs of clients served.
  • Additional responsibilities as required.

Competencies:

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with Orthodox and Secular Jewish communities, Jewish holidays, and the yearly calendar, cultural and religious traditions, and dietary laws
  • Ability to competently coordinate at dual locations, supporting staff and clients at Brooklyn Hub in Boro Park and main office related functions at One State Street Plaza
  • Able to travel when required to multiple sites throughout New York City, Westchester, Long Island, and New Jersey
  • Self-starter mentality required, including desire to take on new responsibilities over time
  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to anticipate needs before they arise
  • Ability to speak publicly in an appropriate and articulate manner depending on audience
  • Capacity to be an enthusiastic, forward-facing representative of the agency
  • Experience in event management and donor relations
  • Interest in advancing the professionalism of the Volunteer Management/Development field

Skill and Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferred 1-3 years’ experience in Community Outreach, Volunteer Management, Social Services, and Donor Relations
  • Fluent in Yiddish and English
  • Comfortable working with volunteers, donors, and clients of all ages
  • Working Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Office Suite, and Zoom required

Special Requirements:

  • Frequent travel throughout the five boroughs with program supplies utilizing public transportation
  • Consistent evening and Sunday work required
  • Increased involvement based on seasonal agency needs (example: food distributions and increased programming in advance of significant holidays)

Compensation: $50,000 - $55,000 per year

Benefits: Major medical, dental, and vision insurance; pre-tax commuter benefits; FSA; 403(b); plus holidays
