Met Council is Hiring a Maintenance Worker/Handyperson Near Brooklyn, NY

We fight poverty through comprehensive social services and by treating each client with compassion, integrity, and respect. Our programs are staffed by experts who help over 305,000 clients each year and advocate on behalf of all needy New Yorkers. Our services include 100% affordable housing at 21 locations, family violence program, Holocaust survivor assistance, geriatric social work, crisis intervention, and the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of 101 food pantries, affordable housing sites, and JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York City.

Position Summary:

The Maintenance Worker/Handyperson ensures that all building structures and surroundings are maintained to provide a safe, secure, and sanitary environment. The Maintenance Worker/Handyperson also ensures compliance with all OSHA and safety laws, rules, and regulations.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Preventive maintenance tasks within the buildings and on the grounds including mopping, waxing floors, etc.
  • Report to the building superintendent on a daily basis.
  • Respond to all daily requests for repairs.
  • Perform light plumbing work and other minor repairs such as clearing clogged sinks, changing light bulbs, etc.
  • Maintain the common areas, i.e., laundry facilities.
  • Maintain outdoor grounds including sweeping, garbage removal, light painting, snow removal, and storm maintenance.
  • Other responsibilities as required. 

Competencies:

  • Skilled in basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work to complete building repairs
  • Knowledge of NYC law, rules and regulations regarding building maintenance and safety including but not limited to HPD, FDNY, DEP, DSNY, DOB.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, residents, community service agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and multiple demands to accomplish tasks in accordance with established requirements.
  • Skilled in analyzing situations in order to identify problems and offer possible solutions.
  • Skilled in communicating with all types of people in a wide variety of situations.

Skill and Education:

  • 1 years of maintenance experience (required)
  • OSHA certificate a plus

Physical Demands: 

  1. Required Constantly: Walking, lifting and/or carrying of materials and tools between 25-50 lbs, climbing stairs.
  2. Required Frequently: Climbing ladders, operating machinery.
  3. Required Occasionally: Shoveling of snow, reaching above the shoulder, pushing and pulling.

Compensation: $19.14 per hour
