Position Title: Executive Director of Apache Language and Culture

Job Summary
The role of Executive Director of Apache Language and Culture involves overseeing and leading initiatives
related to preserving and promoting the Apache language and culture. This position typically requires a
deep understanding of Apache traditions, language, and community dynamics.
This position description may not include all of the listed duties, nor do all of the listed examples include all
tasks which may be found or assigned to this position.
Duties and Responsibilities

Cultural Preservation Strategy: Develop and implement strategies for the preservation and promotion of
Apache language and culture. Work collaboratively with community members, cultural experts, and others.

Language Revitalization Programs: Design and manage programs aimed at revitalizing the Apache language.
This may include language classes, immersion programs, and community events that encourage language
use.

Community Engagement: Foster strong relationships with the Apache community. Collaborate with tribal
leaders, educators, and community member to understand their needs and incorporate their perspectives
into language and culture initiatives.

Curriculum Development: Oversee the development of educational materials and curricula focused on
Apache language and culture, and past and present history. Ensure that materials are culturally sensitive and
appropriate for various age groups.

Collaboration with Educational Institutions: Partner with schools, colleges, and other educational
institutions to integrate Apache language and culture into formal education programs. Advocate for the
inclusion of Apache cultural content educational curricula.

Resource Management: Manage budgets, grants, and resources allocated to language and culture initiatives.
Ensure efficient use of funds for maximum impact.

Research and Documentation: Facilitate research projects to document and preserve Apache cultural
practices, traditions, and oral histories. Work with researchers and scholars to ensure accurate and respectful
representation.

Event Coordination: Organize cultural events, festivals, and gatherings to celebrate Apache traditions. These
events may serve as platforms for language practice and cultural exchange.

Collaboration with Tribal Organizations: Work closely with tribal government entities, cultural committees,
Licensee Committee Tribal library, and related organizations to align language and culture initiatives with
broader community goals.

Advocacy: Advocate for the recognition and support of Apache language and cultural preservation at local,
regional, and national levels. Engage with policymaker to promote awareness and secure funding.

Evaluation and Reporting: Establish metrics to measure the success of language and culture programs.
Provide regular reports showcasing achievements and areas for improvement.

Staff Leadership: Supervise and lead a team of professionals involved in language and culture initiatives.
Provide guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED.
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field preferred.
Must have professional experience in the Apache Language and Culture.
Must have effective communication skills both written and verbal.
Must be able to travel to training or conferences.
Must have knowledgeable with different programs in computers.
Must have a valid NM Driver’s License.
Must have reliable transportation.
Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

Tribal preference and Native American Indian preference shall apply to all positions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
Ability to speak the Apache Language and know the Apache Culture.
Skill to effectively speak and to write clearly.
Skilled in the safe operation of a motor vehicle.
Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and

cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in verbal or written format.
Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
Ability to conduct workshops/good public speaking skills.
Ability to represent organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence in the

community.
Able to analyze and solve problems.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to use hands to finger, handle, or
feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; and reach with hands and
arms. The employee occasionally is required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or
smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must assist with
lifting patients, which may require using leverage to lift and/or move clients.

Work Environment
Work is performed in office, on the road, and within the community. Evening, weekend, and/or holiday may
be required. Travel is required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
