Merion Golf Club is looking for an Assistant-in-Training Golf Course Superintendent. The AIT reports directly to the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent and aids in the direction and participation in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths.

Essential Functions:

  1. Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; aids in supervising the employees and the use of the equipment.
  2. Instructs equipment operations on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment Supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment. Ensures cleanliness and workmanship of pesticide equipment, proper record keeping and training of Interns.
  3. Master the art and science of moisture management as it pertains to greens and other fine turf surfaces.
  4. Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
  5. Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety and personnel discipline
  6. Assists as project foreman.
  7. Development of staff for career advancement.
  8. Perform all other tasks and duties assigned by the supervisor.

Educational Requirements

Currently enrolled or graduated from a two or four-year Turfgrass Management program, certificate program, or related field.

Experience Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

1. Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways, greens; the seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; the planting, cultivating, pruning, hand watering and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation system, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.

2. Ability to lead and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment; to prepare clear and concise reports; and to maintain effective employee and public relations.

3. Requires current state certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator or the ability to acquire licensing within 12 months of starting.

4. Ability to follow oral and written directions.

5. Positive attitude and the willingness to be coached, to learn, and to grow!

Special Requirements

Physical Demands:

  1. Has the ability to lift products/equipment up to 50 lbs. above shoulders
  2. Has the ability to walk at a pace of 3.5 miles / hour operation equipment continually for a period of 3-5 hours.
