AGENCY BACKGROUND:

MercyFirst is a not-for-profit human and social service agency that has been serving children and families in need since we were founded by the Sisters of Mercy/Hermanas de las Misericordia in 1894. Today our agency continues to address the emotional and physical needs of children and families in Brooklyn, Queens and across Long Island through innovative treatments and life-changing interventions. We provide community-based prevention and family foster care services, group homes in the community for struggling children and families within the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and short-term residential services for unaccompanied migrant children. Each year, MercyFirst serves more than 3,000 children, teenagers and families overcome enormous obstacles, re-imagine their futures and develop their full potential.PROGRAM BACKGROUND:

The children in our START with Hope program are in the U.S. as children whose parents/guardians are not physically with them. Many of our children have fled dangerous and violent situations in their own home countries, including but not limited to Central and South America. Most of our children have suffered devastating losses through trauma, violence, abandonment, poverty, substance abuses, or abuse. The children’s safety, nutritional, medical, emotional health and education are our top priorities.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Supervisor, the RN will be responsible in providing the best possible nursing care to the residents. Shifts assigned may vary and change according to Agency needs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) and License Practical Nurse (LPN) license is required.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Current CPR certification
  • Courses in Child Abuse Identification and Infection Control.
  • 1 years of related work experience with children and/or families
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • Ability to engage with clients.
  • Understanding and willingness to commit to the agency’s Mission, core values, Sanctuary Commitments and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct Physical Health Assessments for Infants, Children, Adolescents, including HIV Risk Assessments, Initial Nursing assessments, Safety Assessments, General First Aid and Triage Activities
  • Complete nursing assessments within 24 hours of admission to document Medical Necessity
  • Routine Screening for Substance Abuse, Developmental Health, Mental health, Physical Body Checks for Signs of Abuse
  • Routine management and training regarding chronic conditions (Asthma, Diabetes)
  • Training and Health Education related to Sexual Reproductive Health
  • Medication Administration and Management Reconciliation
  • Execute medical orders (tests, tasks, hospitalizations, etc.) as ordered by physician
  • Ensure required documentation for all case actions (medical notes) are completed within established timeframes.
  • Take vital signs, heights, and weights; document observations and activities
  • Provide immunizations.
  • Provide first aid and emergency care as needed.
  • Obtain certain lab specimens.
  • Administer hearing and vision tests.
  • Accept medication deliveries, check for accuracy, store safely.
  • Execute medical orders (tests, tasks, hospitalizations, etc.) as ordered by physician.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients and staff.

Salary Range:
RN: $48/hr - $50/hr

Hiring Incentive - $1,500 after 500 worked hours.
