Today our agency continues to address the emotional and physical needs of children and families in Brooklyn, Queens and across Long Island through innovative treatments and life-changing interventions. We provide community-based prevention and family foster care services, group homes in the community for struggling children and families within the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and short-term residential services for unaccompanied migrant children. Each year, MercyFirst serves more than 3,000 children, teenagers and families overcome enormous obstacles, re-imagine their futures, and develop their full potential.PROGRAM BACKGROUND: The children in our START with Hope program are in the U.S. as children whose parents/guardians are not physically with them. Many of our children have fled dangerous and violent situations in their own home countries, including but not limited to Central and South America. Most of our children have suffered devastating losses through trauma, violence, abandonment, poverty, substance abuse, or abuse. The children’s safety, nutritional, medical, emotional health and education are our top priorities.

POSITION SUMMARY:The Nurse Practitioner shall function as a member of the clinical staff and provide input to the treatment planning team where indicated.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Licensure as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Minimum of 1 year of experience treating children/adolescents in the nursing field. Spanish-speaking preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

All staff are expected to:

  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations and provide opinions on diagnoses and indications for psychotropic medications.
  • Provide ongoing medication management.
  • Assist in psychiatric hospitalizations.
  • Works with the Treatment Team members to establish treatment goals for youth/children utilizing historical and current information available.
  • Ongoing consultation and training of parents and staff to improve the delivery of services and outcomes.
  • Ensure required documentation for all case actions (clinical notes) are completed within established time-frames.
  • Respond to emergencies as needed and/or directed.
  • Record medication and laboratory orders and follow up medication reviews.
  • Report behaviors believed to be symptomatic, emotional, physical, or psychological disturbances.
  • De-escalate emotional and/or physical outbursts using therapeutic crisis intervention.
  • Understand and apply knowledge of child and adolescent development.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for clients.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with clients and staff.

Salary Range $140,000 - $143,000 per year

Hiring Incentive - $1,500 after 500 worked hours.
