Mental Health Association is Hiring a Controller (FT) Near Springfield, MA

MHA is hiring immediately for a Controller. The Controller plays a central role in the development, maintenance, direction and oversight of all finance and accounting activities. Primary responsibilities include managing the comprehensive financial planning and accounting functions for the Association and each related subsidiary in compliance with financial reporting requirements and standards as prescribed by Federal and State regulations, GAAP, and Association policies and procedures.
The Controller's Essential Position Functions:
  • Prepare financial reports to summarize and forecast Association business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and anticipated operations.
  • Exercise financial management to include financial statement reporting, budget preparation and control, preparation of financial projections, and management of daily accounting functions.
  • Monitor cash flow for the Association and each related subsidiary.
  • Prepare and disseminate monthly reports to Program Vice Presidents and Senior Managers. 
  • Develop and implement an effective billing system that assures all services are billed correctly, and include proper documentation, and minimizes the time necessary to collect payments. 
  • Develop and implement an effective system to track all fundraising donation and grant activity including: review of contract agreements, monitoring payments, expenditures and compliance with donor or grantor restrictions. 
  • Monitor internal control policies and procedures to ensure implementation of proper business controls.
  • Oversee expense allocation to ensure cost allocation is accurate for processing in the accounting records. 
  • Manage relationships with external entities including banks, investment advisors, auditors and insurance carriers.
  • Provide oversight and leadership to the fiscal department; identify areas for improvement in efficiency and effectiveness. 
  • Evaluate, assess and monitor performance of direct reports. Assign and adjust work load in a manner that capitalizes upon individual professional strengths. Conduct performance reviews and develop appropriate training and performance plans. Foster on-going staff development to ensure maximum transferability of skill between functions as appropriate.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback and mentor team members. Provide appropriate training to ensure the maintenance of the skills necessary to meet agency standards. 
  • Confer with Vice President of Finance and Human Resources regarding the resolution of personnel related matters. Confer or participate in employee corrective action process and keep Vice President of Finance apprised of significant developments. Mediate conflicts within department. 
  • Conduct regular department meetings to foster and ensure the communication of agency information, developments, practices and policies and to identify and address department needs.
  • Promote and integrate agency mission, values, philosophy and principles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Finance. 
The Controller's Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field with at least five years of experience within a financial/accounting leadership capacity. 
  • Must have knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, third party outpatient behavioral health procedures, and procedures for Massachusetts non-profit agencies.
  • Must have skills to make and verify computations with accuracy, to compile statistical data and prepare routine reports and to work under time constraints.
  • The Controller positions requires excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, organizational, communication and computer skills, as well as the ability to exercise professional discretion and discernment, independent judgement, and business acumen. 
  • Software skills should include Excel, Word, and Outlook, Blackbaud and Peachtree. 
  • Duties require verbal communication abilities, visual acuity to written and computer screen data, attention to detail and manual coordination and dexterity in the operation of office equipment.
