Mendocino Forest Products is Hiring a Manager, Forest Inventory Near Scotia, CA

Overview

Humboldt Redwood Company, LLC. (HRC) is seeking a Manager, Forest Inventory to join our Forestry team based in Scotia, CA. 

The base salary for this position is $100,000.00 to $125,000.00.  Your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic locations, skills, education and/or experience. Please keep in mind that that the range published is the full base salary. We also offer a generous benefits package.

This position leads program to identify, collect, analyze, and maintain relevant inventory data relating to our privately owned timberlands. Coordinates with Geographic Information Systems Manager to make data accessible to others in the organization. Coordinate with Forest Managers to develop forest growth and yield models. Coordinates with Carbon Program Manager to assist in the development of carbon offset projects.

The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Develop, organize, implement, and manage timber inventory.
  • Timber inventory cruising contract origination and administration.
  • Manage and deploy a small staff of timber inventory cruisers and check cruisers.
  • Coordinate and assist GIS Manager to make inventory information available to the organization.
  • Originate and administer contracts for procurement of aerial imagery.
  • Coordinate and assist Carbon Program Manager with carbon project inventory, development, and quality control.
  • Interpret aerial photographs to determine timber types and other forest attributes.
  • Develop and maintain timber stand shape files using Geographic Information Systems.
  • Design specific maps to display various forest values.
  • Work with forest managers to develop growth and yield models, and outputs.
  • Integrate simulation outputs from model into forest management.
    • Improve representation of forest ecosystem (relationship between relevant plant and soil processes and atmosphere) to improve prediction of stand growth and forest development under changing environmental and management conditions
    • Model forestry practices, to assess wood, quantity, harvesting procedures and costs.
  • Develop inventories for timber investment modeling.
  • Support Forest Managers with land management planning.
  • Manage quarterly harvest reports and annual harvest depletion models.
  • Provide leadership and drive in completing the tasks listed above in a timely fashion.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B. S.) from four-year college or university in Forestry, Natural Resources, or sampling/mathematics field; minimum five years’ experience in forest inventory analysis, timber cruising, other sampling; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • To perform this position successfully, an individual should have knowledge of ESRI software, relational databases, statistical programs, computer programming, Microsoft Office suite including Access.
  • Experience with FPS, FVS, CACTOS, CRYPTOS, FORESEE, or other similar predictive analytical models.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, regulators, and the general public
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Must carry a valid California Driver’s License and be eligible to operate a company vehicle under company policy guidelines

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, climb, or balance, and communicate
  • The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet
  • This position may require the following equipment when in the field: eye protection, hearing protection, safety shoes, leather/rubber gloves, sleeve protection and a hard hat
  • Position travels locally, usually by car, up to 5% of the time
