Mendocino Forest Products is Hiring a Director, Transportation Near Calpella, CA

Overview

Mendocino Forest Products, LLC. (MFP) is seeking an experienced Director, Transportation to oversee our day-to-day transporation operations. This position will be based in Calpella, CA. 

The base salary for this position is $130,000.00 to $170,000.00. Your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic locations, skills, education and/or experience. Please keep in mind that that the range published is the full base salary. We also offer a generous benefits package.

The Director of Transportation will be responsible for all day-to-day transportation operations, strategy, and management to continually refine the transportation operations of the company and its subsidiaries. Accountable for allocating appropriate resources to achieve timely and accurate delivery of products to the customer in the most efficient and safe manner.

The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Collectively providing 950 employees and their families with excellent wages and benefits in communities throughout the Western USA. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant.

Responsibilities

  • Direct all transportation planning and execution, including negotiation of rail, truck, and ocean freight contracts.
  • Lead the strategic direction and analyze financial reports, customer profitability, and other company data, identifying trends and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with department managers/supervisors on transportation systems, standard practices, processes, and procedures to improve customer service, safety, efficiency, accuracy, product care and driver morale.
  • Drive efficiency and cost reduction throughout the delivery function and associated operating functions while maintaining a high level of performance.
  • Responsible for coordinating the day-to-day transportation operations of the company and directing major projects.
  • Provide strong leadership and direction to transportation teams, including managers, supervisors, and frontline staff.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement within the transportation department.
  • Oversee the entire budgeting process for department, from proposal to expense control.
  • Maintain awareness of all financial transactions, ensuring that projects are in line with allotted budgets and establishing rates with carriers and providers.
  • Establish and maintain compliance of all programs with state and federal regulations, including those imposed by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
  • Optimize the transportation network from the inside, by constantly researching and testing software tools, management methodologies, and workflow processes.
  • Address safety concerns and customer complaints promptly.
  • Manage rail function supporting mill and reload locations across all company sites.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A. or B.S.) from an accredited four-year College, or University preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience leading a team in rail, truck, and ocean freight required
  • Working knowledge of Transportation Management Systems (TMS)
  • Strong leadership abilities with excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic plans, drive process improvements, and achieve operational efficiencies.
  • Applicant must have a proven track record challenging status quo and implementing change management.

Communication – the director of transportation must be an excellent, well-rounded communicator adept at making presentations, facilitating meetings, negotiating contracts, and holding one-on-one conversations

Data analysis – to identify project strengths and weaknesses, the director of transportation should be able to synthesize data from multiple sources and distill their findings into action steps for improvement
