JOB SUMMARY: The Licensed Vocational Nurse performs general and special nursing care and related duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and within the recognized technical and competence limits as outlined in the Nurse Practice Act and by hospital protocols. He/she will individualize patient care based upon age appropriate and developmental needs. Should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit. Performs other duties as assigned.
PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS
Essential Function
1. Implements safe therapeutic care for group of assigned patients.
a. Safely performs and documents the nursing procedures required by the patient assignment.
b. Demonstrates proficiency in performing all nursing skills.
c. Demonstrates knowledge of procedures and/or protocols.
d. Demonstrates safe and efficient use of specialized equipment.
e. Demonstrates accurate administration of medications.
f. Prioritizes own work load relative to patient care needs.
g. Completes clinical assignments in a timely fashion including maintenance of equipment and supplies necessary for provision of patient care.
• Medication stock
• Medical/surgical supplies
• Maintains safe, therapeutic, physical environment.
h. Completes non clinical assignments, tasks and projects within a pre-established agreed upon time frame.
i. Coordinates patient care activities with other nursing staff and physicians.
j. Identifies changes in patient status and reports to Charge Nurse.
k. Seeks out resources when feels uncomfortable or situation exceeds the scope of practice.
l. Explains tests, procedures, and process to patient/family. Follows through on teaching phase developed. Assists in teaching patient/family knowledge and skills essential to understanding and coping with illness.
m. Documents patient/family level of understanding and documents on medical record.
n. Communicates and interacts with patient/family in a way that is perceived as positive and supportive.
o. Maintains cost containment effectively:
• Prudent use of supplies and equipment
• Appropriate charging of supplies.
2. Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• Graduate of an accredited school of Vocational Nursing
Work Experience:
• Previous Skilled Nursing and/or Acute Care experience - preferred
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
• Current California LVN license – required
• Current AHA BLS – required
• IV certification - preferred
Language Requirements:
• None
Physical Demands:
• Must be able to sit for 4 hours and stand/walk for 6 hours or more per day.
• Must be able to bend, reach overhead and kneel.
• Must be able to push/pull and lift up to 35 pounds.
Special Demands:
• Ability to work well with others and to perform a variety of assigned duties.
Special Considerations:
• Will be dealing with patient of all ages to include: adults and elderly/geriatrics.
