 NEW 2023 INCREASED PAY SCALES
Positions available at Island Pediatrics, Tonawanda Pediatrics, and Transit Meadow Pediatrics

Reports to: Nurse Manager/ Assistant Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor

Non- Exempt Position Essential 

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Prepare patients for examination. Obtain all necessary diet and developmental histories. Elicit and document relevant medical history. Obtain and record all necessary vital signs. Review medications.

2) Administer injectable pharmaceuticals. Prepare, administer, and document vaccinations and/ or injectable medication as ordered by a provider. Provide patient education materials. 

3) Obtain patient samples. Obtain urine, blood, and stool samples as needed, using sterile technique, and always following universal precautions.

4) Perform labs and other testing. Accurately obtain, conduct, and document simple laboratory tests always using universal precautions. Examples include Urinalysis, Urine Cultures, Rapid Strep testing, Throat Cultures, Lead Screens, Hemoglobin’s. Perform other in office testing such as vision screenings, audiograms, and pulse ox’s. Recognize the clinical relevance of test results. 

5) Process Prescription Requests. Accurately record and communicate to providers any request for medications using the EMR. 

6) Answer medical information line and render advice according to protocols. Accurately obtain patient history of common childhood illnesses or patient concerns by telephone according to accepted office protocols. Document all aspects of telephone communication. Provide follow- up phone calls in response to a parent or provider request. 

7) Complete forms. Complete health appraisal form or daycare form for provider completely and accurately. 

8) Emergency procedures and equipment. Know location of emergency equipment and be able to use appropriately. Review emergency procedures monthly and complete sign off sheet. Replenish supplies after each use using appropriate checklist.

9) Maintain asthma assessment skills. Maintain current knowledge of asthma education and office protocols. Maintain knowledge about proper usage of all asthma medications and be able to perform demonstrations and teaching techniques. Educational materials, community, and self-management resource list in cabinets in each exam room. To be distributed per protocols.

10) Weight Management/Weight check. Maintain current education and office protocols. Educational materials, community, and self-management resource list in cabinets in each room. Distribute per protocol. 

11) Stock supplies. Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms and stock supplies according to needs. Process laundry neatly and in a timely manner.

12) Works collaboratively with care team. Provides nurses, medical assistants, secretaries, providers, and managers assistance and anticipates needs. 

13) Customer Service. Maintain effective communication in a positive manner to provide the highest quality of customer service to the community. Assure that patients perceive our value through an environment of mutual confidence, trust, high ethics, and respect.

14) Maintain clinical credentials. Maintain current NYS nursing license, infection control, and CPR certification.

15) Other duties may be assigned. All the duties and standards of this position will be performed according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines within the department and the facility. Additional job duties may be assigned at any time within the employee’s scope of practice. 

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty to a satisfactory level. 

Education, Skills and Experience: 

• Current New York State R.N. or L.P.N. nursing license, infection control, and CPR certification. 

• Prior experience in pediatric medical office preferred. 

• Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team. 

• Have excellent written and oral English communication skills, both face to face and over the phone.

• Ability to perform nursing procedural skills with accuracy and consistency. 

• Ability to effectively problem solve, assume responsibility, and maintain confidentiality. 

• Have basic computer knowledge, ability to keyboard with accuracy.

• Willing to serve others and seek personal development. 

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

• Up to 8 hours a day of continuous standing, walking, or talking on telephone as needed. Telephone time is up to the manager’s discretion and will also be based on the number of hours worked.

• Must be able to bend, stoop, and lift 25 pounds. 

• Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and lab chemicals.

• Utilizes computer and keyboard extensively daily. 

Employment: The staff nurse will be employed under the provisions of the offices general employment policies as written and amended in the practice’s employee handbook. The staff nurse will be held accountable for the provision of patient confidentiality both within and outside the office setting. The employee will maintain a respectful attitude towards patients and employees at all times.
