JOB SUMMARY

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Library Manager, this employee performs routine and significant tasks in providing library service to patrons.

Responsibilities include work primarily in assisting patrons with a wide variety of needs, assisting with collection development, programming, and technical services areas, and may consist of work in other library areas as needed.

This position requires a high level of skill in customer service, daily work with the public, and the ability to do detailed work such as record-keeping and research.

Computer skills and other equipment are also required.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Examples of Essential Job FunctionsAssists in collection management, acquisition, cataloging, processing, and withdrawal of all library materials.

Prepares statistics and reports as necessary.Works alongside Library Assistants I & II to accomplish all circulation duties.

Interacts directly with the public at the service desk, dealing with and working to resolve customer issues in a courteous and timely manner.

Interacts regularly with department staff and the public regarding season pool pass purchases and other customer service-related needs and issues.

Provide reader's advisory service.Responds to public or other inquiries and concerns about City policies and procedures.Oversees overdue notices, notices for lost and damaged materials, and notices for missing materials.

Works with the Youth Services Librarian to develop and implement family and young adult programming.Assists with the library website, including editing program information, updating reading suggestions, and checking existing library information for accuracy.

Assists with departmental programming along with other department staff.Attends monthly staff meetings and training and professional development activities.

Assists with interviewing applicants, evaluates staff performance, and trains Library Assistants assigned to work at the circulation desk, both paid and volunteer staff.

Assists with evaluating library needs and formulating short and long-range plans to meet goals and objectives associated with library and city strategic plans.

Prepares and makes presentations to the public in the library and off-site.Evaluate issues and options regarding departmental operations and make decisions and recommendations.

Assists the director and library manager in preparing the departmental annual budget request.Performs manual labor while completing various operational tasks, such as setting up tables for programming.

Regular attendance is essential for this position.Perform other duties as apparent or assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to use logic and science to solve problems with abstract and concrete variables.Ability to listen and provide requested information in person and on the telephone.

General knowledge of customer service.General knowledge of the library operations, collection organization, equipment, and staffing needs.

good oral and written communication skills.Knowledge of relevant local, state, and federal regulations regarding library services and issues.

Knowledge of safety precautions associated with public library services.Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities in a public library, thorough knowledge of micro-computing applications or PC computing.

General knowledge of public library organization and classification principles.Ability to perform all job duties safely and in accordance with applicable rules, guidelines, policies, and training.

Physical Characteristics of the JobMedium work requires exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly.

Environmental ConditionsThe work is performed primarily inside an office and public service environment. It requires sitting and standing for extended periods, and it may expose the employee to unpleasant social situations, significant work pace pressure, and, at times, irregular work hours, including evenings and weekends.
