Director of Safety

The Director of Safety is responsible for executing, overseeing, and implementing safety protocols and procedures. Primary responsibilities include, ensuring compliance with federal and local regulations, implementation of the industry standard for safety across job sites and collaborating with operations to ensure the safety vision is being conducted. This role requires a strong understanding of safety regulations, risk management practices, and a commitment to fostering a culture of safety throughout the organization.

  • Regularly review and update safety protocols to address emerging risks and technologies.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees at all levels, emphasizing best practices and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Oversee employee training on safety standards and policies, ensuring that all staff is adequately trained.
  • Conduct risk assessments of operations, identifying potential hazards and implementing strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Conduct safety inspections and audits to ensure compliance with regulations and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with internal departments, external contractors, regulatory agencies, and community to promote safety and address concerns related to operations.
  • Collaborate to develop contingency plans and response protocols for emergencies.
  • Ensure that the organization remains compliant with all applicable laws and regulations and serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies as needed.
  • Lead investigations into safety incidents and accidents, analyzing root causes and identifying corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain detailed records of incidents, near misses, and corrective measures taken.
  • Evaluate compliance with safety standards and identify areas for improvement.
  • Foster a culture of safety throughout the organization by promoting awareness, accountability, and proactive hazard reporting.
  • Encourage employee participation in safety initiatives and recognize achievements in safety performance.
  • Collaborate with management to implement and enforce safety policies and procedures.
  • Manage Regional Safety Managers and other safety personnel.
  • Maintain environmental, safety, and health permits, documents, and records as required.
  • Develop and update comprehensive safety policies and procedures aligned with industry standards and regulations.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and staying current with industry trends and best practices in safety management.
  • Proficient in safety management systems and software tools for incident reporting, risk assessment, and compliance tracking.
  • All other duties as assigned.

What is Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of safety experience and possession of OSHA 500, or another accredited safety certification (e.g., CSP, ASP, OHS, CHST, CSST, CSHO); alternatively, a minimum of 3 years of verifiable experience and a bachelor’s degree in a Safety-related curriculum.
  • Proven experience in safety leadership roles within the utilities sector or a related industry.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Maintain and enhance knowledge in gas distribution, pipeline, and underground electric safety.
  • Ability to travel nationwide and regionally with overnight travel as needed to fulfill position responsibilities, mandatory monthly travel to all assigned areas.
  • Uphold professional interaction, appearances, and communication at all levels of the organization.
  • Preferred qualifications include continued professional development and Quanta train-the-trainer certification.
  • Valid Driver’s License and adhering to approved safe driving behaviors and follow all DMV rules and regulations.
  • On-call availability 24/7 or as assigned, including after hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods, with repeated lifting (up to 50 lbs.), kneeling, crawling, climbing, and reaching.

This position is subject to the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) drug & alcohol testing regulations as outlined in 49 CFR Part 382 and/or 49 CFR Part 199.
