PROBATION: All persons, including current City employees, selected from this position will be on probation for 6 months. CLASS DESCRIPTION A Community Health Educator III designs, organizes, and conducts health educational and promotional programs. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in an office where working conditions are normal. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must: EDUCATION: Have a bachelor's degree in public or community health education from an accredited college or university. AND EXPERIENCE: Have two years of experience performing public or community health education work. OR NOTES(EQUIVALENCIES): Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and three years of experience performing public or community health education work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES Some positions in this classification assigned to Baltimore City Health Department may require a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver’s license and eligibility to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit. NOTES: In some designated positions, specific experience providing community health education in HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Diseases or Tuberculosis may be required. Some positions in this class may require, in addition to fluency in English, fluency in reading, writing, speaking, and translating English into a non-English language. KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of the principles and techniques of health education. Knowledge of individual and group behavior. Knowledge of facts and prevention of a wide variety of diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, STD, and Tuberculosis. Skill, in certain designated positions, in speaking, translating, reading and writing a non-English language utilizing specific established rules pertaining to such factors as spelling in letters or characters in a Latin or non-Latin-based alphabet or writing system, word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, pronunciation, punctuation and other related language mechanics. Ability to design, organize, conduct, and evaluate community health education and promotion programs. Ability to utilize the computer and common business presentation software packages to prepare community health education and promotion materials. Ability to develop and conduct in-service training programs in health education. Ability to act as a health educational consultant. Ability to deal with city government officials and personnel and community groups and organizations. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
