Coverage needed for:
  • Academic Semesters: Sunday-Tuesday 3:30-11:30pm, Friday 11:30-7:30pm, Saturday 9:30-5:30pm
  • Winter Session: Monday-Friday 9:30-5:30pm
Pay Rate: $17.50 per hour

Job Summary:
As Library Building Monitor Supervisor, work within a team to coordinate and oversee security activities, and monitor library users to reduce theft, vandalism, and infractions of library rules in the W. E. B. Du Bois Library. The Library Building Monitor Supervisor will perform duties in accordance with standard procedures, exercise a high degree of independent judgment in the performance of tasks, and exercise discretion in handling confidential information. This position reports to the Assistant Director, Facilities.
Essential Functions:
  • Working in a team under the Assistant Director, Facilities, coordinate and oversee the security activities of the W. E. B. Du Bois Library during assigned shifts. Monitor library users to reduce theft, vandalism, and infractions of library rules. Interact with other campus departments, including campus police, as necessary to ensure operational continuity. Communicate with library administrators as needed to solve complex problems or to receive instructions in emergency situations.
  • Respond to maintenance and other emergencies within the building. Take appropriate steps to correct the problem, safeguard the occupants and maintain services. Initiate work order requests for building maintenance issues.
  • Monitor use of W. E. B. Du Bois Library. Lock and unlock doors according to published schedule of hours. Prepare building for use or for closing according to established procedures. Enforce library rules and regulations concerning items that may not be brought into the Library and items that may not be removed from the building. Enforce library and university rules and regulations concerning health and safety, including proper response to fire alarms and elevator alarms and malfunctions. Assist people stranded in elevators as needed. Receive and record reports of building problems and user behavior problems. Make regular rounds and security checks of the building. Conduct surveillance of assigned areas and notify appropriate authorities as needed. Take appropriate action in accordance with standard procedures. Keep records of activity. Request assistance from appropriate library and university agencies as required, and follow up as appropriate.
  • Train and supervise student employees. Provide backup support to ensure that student time is complete and accurate, so that student employees will be paid for time worked.
  • Act as backup Learning Commons Desk as needed. Exercise considerable independent judgment in handling questions directly or referring them to professional reference librarians or other paraprofessional staff.
  • Supervise the Information Desk. Answer questions or refer queries to other staff members in accordance with guidelines provided in the Information Desk and Access Services policy manuals.
  • Assist patrons with checking out items using either the Library’s Management System or self -checkout machines. Refer problems to Learning Commons Desk employees.
Qualifications:
  • Supervisory experience involving training and oversight in a fast-paced setting
  • Successful prior experience in a position requiring interpersonal and customer service skills, including tactfulness, and the ability to overcome obstacles and provide appropriate solutions to problems
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Access
  • Experience successfully working on a team setting
