The Assistant Director, Math/Science Center will run the Math and Science Center and coordinate math and science academic support across the Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland campuses, and remotely as needed. This person will hire, supervise, and train full- and part-time staff within the department, as well as manage budgets, coordinate center schedules, engage in active outreach to faculty and staff, develop and deliver workshops, deliver direct support to students across the math curriculum, perform administrative tasks associated with department needs, and assist the Director with day-to-day operations. The Assistant Director will also foster deep content knowledge, implements a pedagogy of teaching students how to learn, and encourage students’ active engagement with learning specialists, faculty, peer tutors, and classmates.Key Responsibilities and Duties: Hire, train, and supervise full-time and part-time professional staff within the Math and Science Center; Manage the Math and Science Center budget across grants and local funding lines; Oversee day-to-day operations of the Math and Science Center, including all weekly scheduling for the full-time and part-time staff; Provide direct one-on-one and small-group support to students across all math courses; Work closely with the Academic Achievement Center Director to integrate Math and Science Center services with peer tutoring, testing, workshops, marketing, outreach, and other Academic Achievement areas; Work closely with Deans, chairs of the math and science departments, and faculty across the divisions; Perform administrative tasks, including but not limited to: assisting with grants, collecting statistics, developing materials for and maintaining the Web, providing budgetary input, maintaining electronic and print records, and organizing office files; Serve as principal investigator (PI) for area grants, as required; Contribute to grant writing, reporting, collecting data, and presenting information related to student outcomes; Run Math and Science Center department meetings and actively participate in Academic Achievement Center meetings; Support all aspects of placement testing alongside testing staff; Develop and deliver workshops to support students with Accuplacer, math skills, study skills, and “just in time” support; Develop, coordinate, and deliver a summer bridge program for math; Develop handouts and other materials for student use; Serve as an academic advisor for assigned students; Attend and participate in department meetings and professional development; Serve on college-wide committees and participate in college-wide initiatives such as recruitment, orientation, open houses, and graduation; Collaborate with local high schools and other organizations on math/science academic support; Maintain professional knowledge of research related to developmental education, math education, and best practices in individualized student support; Refer students to appropriate college services (e.g. Accessibility Resources Center, Peer Tutoring, Reading and Writing Center, Counseling, Academic Advising); Work collaboratively with faculty and with academic and student support services, including coordinating group study sessions with faculty and staff; Continually seek to improve the overall professionalism and performance of the center; Assist the Director in the daily operation of the Academic Achievement Center and act as point of contact as needed; Perform other duties as assigned.Commitment to Equity: Support MassBay’s commitment to the Equity Agenda; collaborating with faculty, staff, and students on the College’s strategic initiatives dedicated to closing the equity gap related to student outcomes; Support MassBay’s commitment to being anti-racist; embracing a community free of bias and inequality; Contribute to discussion and review of applicable College policies with a critical lens toward diversity, equity, and inclusion; Engage with the Office of Diversity on issues related to underserved student success; Further the examination of pertinent practices that are culturally responsive and reflective of inclusive perspectives; and Engage in conversations with colleagues and students regarding best practices within the discipline or programmatic related to equity and inclusion.
