Mass General Brigham is Hiring a Phlebotomy Lab Tech II - BWH Pathology Main Campus Near Boston, MA

Phlebotomist/Laboratory Technician II greets patients, process paperwork and specimens, and logs all tests into the computer. Performs heelsticks, fingersticks, and venipunctures on all patients to include: Infant (age 0-2) Children (age 2-14) Adolescents (age 14-20) Adult (age 20-65) Older Adults (>65 years)

  1. Demonstrate professional customer service skills whenever interacting with customer.
  1. Perform receptionist and clerical duties
  1. Greets patients arriving in the phlebotomy laboratory.
  2. Answer phone in an appropriate manner.
  3. Logs into computer, accesses EPIC and Sunquest
  4. Print and Fax results as needed making certain HIPPA protocols are followed.
  5. Performs other duties, necessary paperwork and clerical.
  1. Performs Phlebotomy and other responsibilities related to phlebotomy
  1. Performs routine and difficult venipuncture on infants, children, young adults, adults, and geriatric populations using aseptic and proper technique.
  2. Perform heel-sticks and finger-sticks as needed.
  3. Collect blood culture using aseptic techniques.
  4. Prepares the blood drawing area for patients, making certain an appropriate inventory of supplies is maintained and that the area is maintained in a clean and orderly manner.
  5. Logs, uses and maintains Sunquest collection manager devices.
  6. Generates and affix barcode labels to specimens after collection in the presence of patient.
  1. Logs into the computer, all tests checked off on the requisition, making certain all pertinent information and comments are included in the process.
  1. Creates HOV and release test orders using the EPIC Hyperspace system.
  1. Produces bar code labels to affix to specimens after collection.
  1. Makes certain that specimens are appropriately labels and collected.
  1. Maintains correct paperwork and procedures.
  1. Processes specimens for testing:
  1. Accessions specimens. Manual log-in procedures, making certain all pertinent information is included in the process. Makes certain all "stat" and other priority samples are processed first.
  2. Labels specimens as necessary and properly forwards them for testing. Makes certain the number and color of tubes is correct. Makes certain "stat" specimens are readied for processing first.
  3. Processes specimens by centrifugation. Makes certain specimens are spun in order of their priority and knowing the correct centrifugation speed/mode.
  4. Aliquots samples as needed. Makes certain that amounts and types of specimens are aliquoted correctly. Maintains sample integrity per established procedures. Places samples in the appropriate locations for pick-up by partner's courier.
  1. Responsible for maintaining a safe work area and adhering to all safety, Infection Control, and OSHA guidelines and policies.
  1. Demonstrates professional customer service skills whenever interacting with a customer.
  1. Performs support services as assigned and other duties as required.
  1. Is responsible for all other responsibilities and duties necessary for the day to day operations of the laboratory including safety and compliance OSHA.
  1. Responsible to be aware of The Joint National Patient Safety Goals and to comply with BWH Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures
  1. Rotation to all ambulatory labs, including offsite locations and Inpatient Phlebotomy when needed
  1. High School diploma required
  1. Phlebotomy certification preferred (ASCP, ASPT)
  1. Phlebotomy certificate preferred (graduate of a phlebotomy training program or schooling)
  1. Two years experience as a phlebotomist
