The Head Women’s Basketball Coach/Coordinator of Athletic Academic Success is responsible for every aspect coaching the Women’s Basketball team and serves as the Athletic and Recreation Department’s Coordinator of Athletic Academic Success for all varsity teams.

The Head Women’s Basketball Coach/Coordinator of Athletic Academic Success is appointed by the Vice President for the Student Experience and the Director of Athletics and Recreation but reports to the Associate Director of Athletics and Recreation/SWA and Director of Athletics and Recreation and to the Director of Athletics and Recreation.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with benefits.

Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach/Coordinator of Athletic Academic Success. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Full responsibility for coaching the teams, including the traditional season, non-traditional season and off-season conditioning/activities
  • Striving towards and attaining competitive success for the Women’s Basketball team
  • Recruit qualified and competitive student-athletes to the Women’s Basketball program. Specific and defined target recruiting and roster (retention) numbers established in conjunction with the Director of Athletics must be met on an annual basis to insure current position status
  • Supervise and evaluate assistant coaches
  • Develop an appropriate and working knowledge of involved NCAA, Conference, and Marywood University athletic policies and procedures
  • Administrative duties involved with coaching, i.e. monetary transactions, NCAA forms, uniform distribution, equipment ordering, budgeting, etc.
  • Serve as the Athletic and Recreation Department’s Coordinator of Athletic Academic Success for all varsity teams.
    • Monitor academic progress of varsity student-athletes on a timely and consistent basis
    • Check academic eligibility status of student-athletes on a timely and consistent basis (weekly)
    • Inform supervisors and coaches of student-athlete academic progress (e.g. ‘deficiency’ mid-term reports, end of semester eligibility reports)
    • Maintain a working knowledge of NCAA academic eligibility and progress criteria
    • Maintain communication with the Director of Academic Excellence Center and be abreast of programs available to student-athletes. Inform coaches and student-athletes of these programs
    • Organize and assign staffing to (e.g. work study) group study halls in conjunction with coaches
    • Provide information to coaches and student-athletes concerning procedure for Excused Absence Policy
    • Submit bi-annual (end of semester) academic progress report to President, Vice President, Director of Athletics and Athletic Department staff members
    • In coordination with Director of Athletic Communications, nominate qualified student-athletes for Conference and Regional academic awards
  • Responsible for overseeing team fundraising endeavors and participation in department-wide fundraising initiatives
  • Monitoring of annual budgets for equipment, recruiting, uniforms, apparel, team travel, etc.
  • Promote values of Marywood University, academics, sportsmanship and life values to team members and all student-athletes
  • Be familiar with all NCAA Division III guidelines and eligibility requirements relating to the recruitment of student-athletes
  • Develop an appropriate and working knowledge of allowed recruitment tactics, policies and strategies
  • Be knowledgeable about the NCAA Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA)
  • Attendance at student-athlete seminars, annual coaching/educational clinic, annual orientation sessions and all athletic staff meetings throughout twelve months.
  • Maintenance of a written log of all work-related activities including recruitment, conditioning, administrative areas during the entire year. Communication with staff recording liaison for this task is consistently necessary
  • Understand, agree to and sign annually the Athletics and Recreation department’s and Conference “Code of Conduct/Sportsmanship” policy. Act consistently in a manner reflective on its intent
  • Act as a site supervisor at various sporting events under the direction of the Associate Director of Athletics
  • Represent the Athletic Department in an appropriate and professional manner at all times
  • Other duties as assigned

III. Education

  • High School Diploma with a commitment to ongoing learning required
  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree preferred

IV. Work Experience

  • 2-3 years of experience as a coach, preferably at the collegiate level
  • Coaching and recruiting experience, preferably at the Division III level
  • General knowledge of intercollegiate athletics, NCAA policies and compliance issues preferred

V. Special Qualifications/Skills Requires:

  • Strong interpersonal, planning and organizational abilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Competence with technology, resources
  • Current and valid driver’s license are vital to fulfilling the responsibilities of this position
  • Securement of Adult CPR Certification, AED Certification, and First Aid Certification (American Red Cross). These certifications must be on file prior to the first official practice, i.e. non-traditional and traditional season
  • Nights and weekend work required
  • Travel for competitions and recruiting required

The employee must also possess the ability to occasionally lift, carry, and/or drag approximately 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include ability to distinguish the nature of objects by using the eye. Tasks such as working at a computer, which involves extensive wrist and hand movements, are also required.
The operation of vehicles and the transportation of athletes are duties that are required at various times. The selected employee must have a valid driver’s license issued in the United States and will be subject to a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) check.
