REPORTS TO:
Middle School Principal
 
EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
Regular, full time
 
FLSA STATUS:
Exempt

 
POSITION SUMMARY: Assist middle school students with the development of skills and knowledge that lead to continuous learning and a productive adult life.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assess student achievement continuously, in order to design appropriate instruction. Administer standardized and criterion referenced tests according to district policies and procedures.
  • Establish a safe and comfortable environment for students, including guidelines and consequences for behavior that are reasonable and appropriate for the setting.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the course(s) of study and implement them in the classroom and/or laboratory, using a variety of instructional methods and materials.
  • Prepare clear and timely lesson plans, as specified by the Principal that demonstrate knowledge of the course(s) of study and contain sound teaching and assessment methods.
  • Provide appropriate instruction for all students.
  • Schedule instructional time according to district and building guidelines.
  • Make effective use of resources and materials and care for them in a responsible manner.
  • Participate actively on a team and/or in a department.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records, according to district and building rules. Record keeping requirements may vary with teaching assignments.
  • Prepare adequately for substitute teachers.
  • Observe the adopted daily building schedule, including starting and ending times for teachers and students, and perform all assigned duties; for example, study halls, cafeteria, bus, hallway, field trips, emergency drills.
  • Attend all staff meetings, unless excused.
  • Serve on committees and participate in school activities and after-school programs and events, in a professionally responsible manner.
  • Report to parents, in writing and at conferences, at the intervals established by the district and/or building.
  • Communicate with parents on an ongoing basis, in a positive manner.
  • Work cooperatively with peers, administrators and support staff.
  • Make appropriate referrals of students for supplemental help; attend planning meetings as assigned, and implement individual plans.
  • Communicate with agencies, authorities and private practitioners, according to confidentiality guidelines and other district procedures.
  • Engage in continuous professional growth, including attending training sessions as assigned. Complete a professional development plan according to procedures adopted by the school district.
  • Learn and implement the administrative procedures that are associated with the teaching assignment; for example, managing an activity account, applying for a field trip.
  • Use sound judgment, tact and diplomacy when interacting with students, parents and the community, and maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain.
  • Serve as a role model for students in the practice of ethical principles, responsible behavior and democratic values.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist with the selection of textbooks and other teaching materials.
  • Work with student teachers if needed.
  • Maintain an appropriate personal appearance.
  • Observe all safety and health regulations of the school district.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, the Superintendent or his/her designee(s).
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Appropriate State of Ohio teaching certificate/license; 7-12 or 4-9 licensure required.
  • Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of the appropriate subject(s) or specialty areas.
  • Knowledge of a variety of instructional designs, methods and materials that are developmentally appropriate and age appropriate for the students.
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of adolescents, and the desire and ability to work effectively with them.
  • Ability to work effectively with other adults in many different situations, including teams of teachers and conferences with parents.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Effective active listening skills.
  • Well-developed organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Basic knowledge of computer technology, or willingness to acquire and appropriately apply such knowledge.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather; that is, being prepared to come to school on all scheduled work days, except calamity days.
  • Some interaction with unruly children.
  • Possible interaction with angry or distraught adults.
  • Must be available for education related purposes outside the instructional day when requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasional requirement to lift, carry, push and pull various items; for example, books and supplies, up to a maximum of 25 lbs.

  • Length of Employment: One Year Limited Contract
