Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks & Recreation is Hiring a Lifeguard (2024 Season) Near Martinsburg, WV

SUMMARY

This job is responsible for ensuring the safety of the aquatic facilities patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies and enforcing the safety rules.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Requirements:

  • 15 years of age or older (age 15 are required to have an approved, valid work permit)
  • Reliable childcare and transportation
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights/weekends
  • Pass a background check

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to easily move through all facility areas and actively interact with patrons
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds frequently
  • Remain alert with no lapses in consciousness
  • Ability to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility
  • Minimum hearing threshold of no more than an average of 25-decibel loss in both ears over a range of frequencies
  • Hearing aids or other corrective devices for hearing should be able to perform all rescue skills and emergency procedures without interruptions to adjust, retrieve, or install or attach a hearing aid or corrective device
  • Corrective eyewear should be able to perform all rescue skills and emergency procedures without interruptions to adjust, clear, or retrieve corrective eyewear

Mathematical Skills:

  • Knowledge of basic math; ability to prepare reports on headcount for patrons and special events

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES include the following:

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Being on time, dependable
  • Maintain continuous surveillance of patrons in facility; act immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency
  • Spot hazards or potential hazards and take measures to prevent accidents
  • Control and report unruly behavior; evict patrons not adhering to facility rules
  • Maintain accurate records as required
  • Maintain safe swimming conditions in pool, on pool deck, and surrounding areas, enforcing health and safety rules
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of medical services
  • Ensure appropriate headcount of people involved in a water sport, event or activity on an hourly basis
  • Calls out warnings to people who may have ventured too far or are in imminent danger
  • Prevent accidents by scanning assigned ones from bottom to top and covering zone in compliance with the 10/10 rule
  • Supervise swimmers to ensure they are swimming within the safety protocols
  • Perform rescues in the event of a drowning or swimming accidents
  • Perform first aid and CPR according to the demands of adverse situations
  • Check safety and rescue tubes and buoys; perform maintenance as needed
  • Ensure that all pool equipment is stored safely and that lost items are placed in the public Lost & Found
  • Perform routine maintenance, as required, of pool, locker rooms, and surrounding areas to cleanliness
  • Perform other related duties as required

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Must hold a valid current American Red Cross Lifeguarding, including CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid certification or equivalent.
  • Working toward G.E.D or High School Diploma

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • External environment: variety of weather conditions to include humidity, rain, and heat

  • Swim Lessons, Senior Swim, Water Aerobics, Adaptive Swim, General Swim, Pool Parties
