Mariners Christian School is Hiring a Director of Finance (Part-Time) Near Costa Mesa, CA

Mariners Christian School / Director of Finance

Start date: Late August 2024

Job type: Part-time; 12-month position with 7 weeks off annually, based on school closure calendar

Starting Range: $50-56 per hour (or commensurate with education and experience). The rate of pay within the specified range may be adjusted at any time by the appointing authority based on the candidates' qualifications, prior experience, education level, and etc.

Reports to: Head of School

Position Summary:

The Director of Finance is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for overseeing the financial operations and planning of our nonprofit school. This position involves strategic and tactical management of both finance and administration, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and non-profit tax compliance. The Director of Finance will work closely with the Head of School, Finance Committee, and the Board of Trustees to ensure financial stability, efficiency, and growth.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Financial Strategy: Develop and execute the organization's financial strategy, aligning with the school's mission, and support strategic decision-making by the board of directors and the senior leadership team.
  • Budget Management: Develop, implement, and monitor the school's annual budget. Track financial activities and maintain the proper fiscal controls to ensure the sustainability of the organization.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare comprehensive financial reports for the board and leadership team, including forecasts, trends, and financial risks.
  • Nonprofit Compliance: Ensure all financial practices are in line with statutory regulations and legislation related to non-profit organizations. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements.
  • Financial Operations: Oversee daily financial operations, including accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, payroll, and investments.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and develop the finance and administrative teams, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.
  • Auditing and Risk Management: Coordinate audit activities and develop strategies for mitigating financial risk.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field is required. A CPA, CMA, MBA, or related advanced degree is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management roles, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role. Experience in the education or nonprofit sector is preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution, including the effective communication of strategies to a board of directors, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations, as well as experience in managing audits, risk, and compliance.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
