Position summary :

We are seeking an enthusiastic Camp Instructor to join our team for an exciting summer camp program. As a Camp Instructor, you will play a vital role in creating a safe, engaging, and memorable experience for campers.

The Camp Instructor is a certified classroom teacher who will plan and implement a camp curriculum appropriate for rising 1st-5th graders that meets the mission of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens while incorporating both art and science activities. The Camp Instructor will work with the Director of Education to create the curriculum, plan activities, and organize materials. The Camp Instructor is responsible for delivery of content, safety and behavior management of the campers, and contact with parents when needed. Camp Instructors will be considered temporary employees of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, and as such must submit to and pass drug screening, fingerprinting and a Level 2 background check.

Payment is $20/hour for the hours of 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday weekly. Reasonable planning and prep time in April/May before camp begins is also compensated. Camp Lookout 2024 will consist of 4 one-week sessions from June 3 - 28 at the Downtown Sarasota Campus.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Work alongside the Director of Education to develop weekly plans that fit the themes for each week. Materials and supplies order list should be substantially complete no later than 2-3 weeks prior to camp.
• Ability to engage and excite children about plants, science, and the natural world.
• Attend and assist in the coordination of camp counselor training the weekend prior to our camp start date.
• Prepare indoor/outdoor spaces for each day’s activities prior to camper arrival each morning.
• Ensure safety protocols are being met. These protocols include:
• Camp instructor will never leave the group without prior arrangements made with the Director of Education.
• Camp instructor remains up to date on weather alerts, including heat.
• Camp instructor should return to cover (classroom) at the first sign of thunder.
• Camp instructor expected to remain with the group during lunch.
• Ensures that the space is clean and set for the next day.
• Effectively uses teen camp counselors and counselors-in-training to assist with the program.

Education and experience:

• Bachelor’s degree with course work in education, science, or art field desired
• Minimum of one year experience as an educator working with elementary-age children

Qualifications:

• Current CPR and First Aid certification.
• Certified Classroom teacher
