Job Type Unclassified Department D800 Superior Court About the Position To ensure equal access to courts, the Court Interpreter – American Sign Language (ASL) position provides a wide variety of accurate and unbiased ASL interpretation services for hearing impaired individuals, in person or via remote videoconferencing, for the Maricopa County Superior Court. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS We recognize your time is valuable, so please apply if you meet the following required qualifications: Education: High School diploma Experience: Two (2) years of paid, professional experience as an interpreter of American Sign Language (ASL) Other Requirements: Legal-A license from the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing that is supported by either the Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L) or the Court Interpreter Certification (CIC). Legal-A license must be maintained during employment. Our Preferred Candidate has: Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation, Translation or related field Three (3) years or more of paid, professional experience as a sign language interpreter Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of: American Sign Language Theory, method, techniques, ethics and standards of interpreting and translating Legal terminology, phonology, vocabulary, grammar, and dialectology Skill in: Conveying meaning accurately without editing, summarizing, adding meaning or omitting Effective interpersonal and communication skills and abilities Ability to: Work independently with minimal direct supervision Interact with the public in a professional manner Interpret accurately and remain impartial including in times of adversarial and emotionally charged situations ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS (This is not an all-inclusive list of all job duties that may be required; employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned. ) Provides voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpretive communication services to litigants and other court-appointed parties during hearings and proceedings, attorney-client interviews, psychological evaluations and other settings in and out of the court. May work in tandem with contract interpreters. Working conditions: Work is performed in the courtroom and related court facilities and includes, but is not limited to, contact with judges, staff attorneys, and the public. Must be able to work with traumatic subject matter. May require travel to various locations throughout Maricopa County. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak clearly and hear; see details of objects that are less than a few feet away; sit for long periods of time; stand, walk, use hands to finger handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and occasionally push, pull or lift up to 20 pounds.
