This position promotes and supports the learning experience of Marian University students by, developing and coordinating a comprehensive academic, student-centered, social-learning environment, for all entering traditional undergraduate students of Marian University. Working with various University offices and academic programs, the Director of First Year Experience (FYE) will develop curriculum, programs and policies to maximize the first year experience and retention for all entering students.

First Year Experience (50%):

  • Direct and implement the First Year Experience Program.
  • Develop and coordinate all First Year Experience programs; working collaboratively with Academic Affairs, Admissions and Student Life to ensure the first year experience programs and events support the academic program of study for the first year student.
  • Design, develop, and present leadership development opportunities for first-year students, partnering with University programs and offices. Include opportunities for students to explore who they are and what gifts and talents they can bring to both their personal and professional development.
  • Develop and implement assessments related to First Year Experience programs.
  • Assist and collaborate in the development of the Registration Programs for new students.
  • Create, maintain and distribute First Year Experience webpage, brochures and marketing materials.
  • Coordinate programs and policies with Student Life staff members.
  • Focus on first-year retention efforts, collaborating with Student Success, Student Life, Athletics, Admissions, Financial Aid, and the Business Office.
  • Recruit, train and supervise the First Year Experience Program student mentors who assist with the FYE program and Sabre Foundations course (SCP 100), focusing on the Sabre Core Outcomes.
  • Assist with fall and spring Orientation, specifically related to the Academic portion of the weekend: role of student mentors, opening ceremonies, introduction to the Sabre Foundations course, academic programs, academic success, advising, and library services. Serve as a member of the Orientation Committee.

Curriculum (45%):

  • Lead the designing, teaching, assessing of the learning and evaluating of the Sabre Foundations course.
  • Coordinate sparkers for the common experience in Sabre Foundations, programming, and workshop series.
  • Recruit and evaluate faculty for the Sabre Foundations course and teach a 3 course load for the academic year.
  • Provide initial orientation and annual in-service for faculty teaching in the First-Year program.
  • Schedule, plan, and facilitate Sabre Foundations Instructor meetings.
  • Facilitate Course/Program Evaluation on a continual basis.
  • Promote the First Year Experience and the Sabre Foundations course to the Marian community and other stakeholders (Parents and Families, local, regional, and national stakeholders).
  • Recommend academic actions and needs to the First Year Experience Curriculum Committee, faculty committees, the Registrar and Dean of Student Success.
  • Communicate with academic advisors and divisional representatives as needed.
  • Serve as a member of the Retention Strategy and Intervention Committee, Marian Cares and other committees as assigned.
  • Work closely with the academic and student support services to encourage student academic excellence.
  • Coordinate the schedule for the Sabre Foundations course with the academic divisions and the Registrar.

Other Responsibilities (5%):

  • Dialogue with the university community to enhance student retention.
  • Prepare and recommends budget to the Dean of Student Success.
  • Perform other specialized duties as assigned.
  • Maintain a positive work environment by cooperating in a professional manner with the college community.

Education, Experience and skills required:

  • Master’s degree in related field, doctorate degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working successfully with FYE programming and curriculum design for the first-year student.
  • Three years of teaching experience in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge in college student development theory, mentoring, retention, and student-centered best practices and supervising student leaders.
  • Development and implementation experience in assessment of academic programs.
  • Demonstrated awareness and experience addressing the needs and concerns of first-year students.
  • Strong oral and written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Appropriate working knowledge of computers.
  • High regard for confidentiality both within and outside the Marian University Community.
  • Strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
  • Proven success working in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships at all organizational levels and with students.
  • Willingness to support the Mission and Core Values of the University.
