Marana Unified School District is Hiring a Teacher Counselor - Job #25-179 Near Tucson, AZ

Position SummaryBy utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school counselors promote student academic success and provide preventative services. School Counselors respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that is aligned with the ASCA National Model and addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students. School Counselors teach, monitor, and plan interventions for increased achievement of all students to ensure that Marana Unified School District (MUSD) graduates leave with a sense of purpose and a post-secondary plan.
The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional position specific duties.
Primary Duties And ResponsibilitiesDELIVERY Implementation Of School Counseling Core Curriculum Will Include
  • Design, deliver, evaluate, and revise a planned sequential and developmentally appropriate counseling curriculum (a minimum of 50% of contract time) to include classroom, small group, and individual counseling in:
    • learning
    • self-management
    • social skills
    • career awareness and exploration
    • career and post-secondary goals
    • personal growth and understanding
    • promote an understanding and appreciation of diverse populations and cultures
    • prepare students for the transition to the next level: high school and post-secondary
High School specific
  • Coordinate various recognition programs and workshops on college planning, financial aid, and scholarships
  • Coordinate college visits to campus including the organization of a Northern Arizona Region college fair and the Arizona High School/College Relations Council Fall Visitation Program
  • Create student awareness of standardized testing and eligibility requirements for tests such as ACT, SAT, NCAA Clearinghouse, etc. by participating in test coordination and notification
Implementation of Responsive Services will include:
  • Consult and collaborate with teachers, staff, families, and other educational/community resources to meet the needs of student in the educational setting (Student Study Teams, PBIS Teams, etc.)
  • Provide and participate in crisis counseling /intervention
  • Provide appropriate resources and recommendations to families
  • Teach, monitor, and plan interventions for increased achievement of all students
  • Facilitate counseling support groups to meet the various personal, social, and academic needs of identified students
  • Provide effective crisis prevention and response intervention services to meet the immediate needs of students (1-on-1 or group setting based on need)
  • Provide interventions for crisis including individual consultations with the student, parent, teacher(s) and provide resources and information about outside agencies for ongoing professional support
  • Provide mediation services for students, parents and/or teachers
  • Provide counseling to students who are frequently tardy, absent, or who have disciplinary problems (or refer to next level of intervention)
Implementation of Individual Student Planning may include:
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Education and Career Action Plans (ECAP) for all students in accordance with the State Board of Education Rule
  • Coordinate, develop, and maintain 504 plans for individual student accommodations and ensure school compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
  • Organize and participate in student study teams through consultation, collaboration, and teaming to determine optimal student environment
  • Participates as needed at special education meetings to advocate for students, as well as, collaborate and consult with teachers and parents about educational goals
  • Verify the required credits, classes, and assessments necessary to meet graduation and post-secondary goals, including standardized testing, assist students’ course selection
  • Develop credit recovery and/or student study skills plan(s)
  • Counsel and support individual student planning through the development of social/emotional, educational and career goals
  • Help students examine and build upon their personal strengths, abilities, interests, and talents
ACCOUNTABILITY and MANAGEMENTImplementation Of System Support
  • Collaborates with colleagues through weekly Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings to work on Performance Based Pay (PBP) Goal and ASCA National Model school counseling programs; share progress with district counseling team quarterly
  • Follow (and train school staff on) suicide and self-injury protocol, Department of Child Safety (DCS) reporting, bully prevention, and harassment/sexual harassment issues
  • Participate in continuous professional learning to improve knowledge and skills
  • Collaborate with colleagues on school/district policies, procedures, and practices
  • Uses available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program
  • Counselors will continually make data-driven decisions regarding the implementation of an ASCA model school program and share results
  • Provide guidance and support to accomplish the school’s mission and school improvement plan
  • Advocate for equal access to programs and services for all students
  • Use data to plan, implement, and assess counseling program accurately and appropriately interpreting and utilizing student data
  • Assist in the development and delivery of the registration process for new and continuing students
  • Support campus-wide PBIS implementation
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Possesses responsible and professional work habits
  • Ability to organize ideas and present them with clarity and conciseness in a variety of settings
  • Experience with computer programs and operations
  • Adhere to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession
  • Demonstrate leadership and utilize best practice in all situations
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
Education And ExperienceRequired Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in school counseling from an accredited college or university
  • School counselor certification from the AZ Department of Education
  • Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model
  • Experience working with any level of K-12 students and their families
  • Demonstrated Knowledge of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS)

Salary$47,180.88 - $51,484.75 (based on 23-24 hiring schedule)
  • 9 Month Contracted Position - Regular Position
