Position Description Summary
The Department of Exceptionality Programs at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania invites applications for ASL Instructor.
The home campus for this position is Bloomsburg with the expectation of serving a multi-campus University within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
The Department of Exceptionality Programs houses ASL/English Interpreting programming at the undergraduate level which prepares students to interpret as entry level interpreters.

Duties
Based on the specific needs of the department at the time of appointment, a successful applicant must be qualified to teach all of the courses in the category of application. These categories include:
  • American Sign Language (ASL) Courses
  • ASL/English Interpreting Courses
Candidates will indicate which category(ies) match their qualifications. Candidates may check all that apply.
Possible course(s) may include:
  • American Sign Language (ASL) Courses- ASL 1, ASL 2, ASL 3, Deaf Culture, ASL Literature, and other ASL related courses.
  • ASL/English Interpreting Courses- Introduction to Interpreting, Interpreting Instruction, Practicum Seminar, Practicum, and other related courses.
The location for these temporary positions varies with the expectation of serving a multi-campus University within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
Qualifying Experience and Education (Minimum/Preferred)
Minimum Requirements for ASL Courses:
  • A Master’s Degree in Deaf Education, ASL Linguistics, ASL/English Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or in a related field
  • Experience teaching ASL or ASL/English Interpreting courses
  • Documentation of ASL fluency
Minimum Requirements for ASL/English Interpreting Courses:
  • A Master’s Degree in Deaf Education, ASL Linguistics, ASL/English Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or in a related field
  • Experience teaching ASL or ASL/English Interpreting courses
  • Documentation of ASL fluency
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Relevant teaching, supervisory, or interpreting experience that meet program area needs
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • American Sign Language Teacher’s Certification

Background Clearances
Offers of employment are conditional, pending successful completion of the background clearances mandated by Act 153 of 2014 and Board of Governors Policy 2014-01-A: Protection of Minors. In order to qualify for a provisional appointment, the Applicant Acknowledgement Consent Form, Provisional Hire Form, Pennsylvania State Police and Justifacts portion of the clearance process must be successfully completed prior to your start date. The remaining PA Child Abuse History Clearance and FBI Clearance must be successfully completed and returned as soon as possible within the first 90 days of employment.
