Camp Shalom at the Mandel JCC of the Palm Beaches is looking for talented, passionate individuals to join us and commit to giving our campers their best summer ever!

JOB SUMMARY: As a Camp Nurse, your primary role is to ensure the health and well-being of campers and staff. You serve as the primary medical resource, providing first aid, administering medications, and responding to health-related concerns. Your presence is essential in creating a safe, supportive, and nurturing atmosphere. Work is generally June – August, Monday – Friday as directed by the summer camp schedule each year. Look below for some specific responsibilities and expectations of this position:


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administer first aid and medical care to campers and staff as needed, addressing injuries, illnesses, and emergencies.
  • Provide basic training to staff for campers with allergies, medical alerts, and special medical needs.
  • Manage and distribute medications according to individual camper health plans.
  • Securing prescription medication in locked cabinet and dispensing medication only as prescribed by doctor authorization to campers with special medical needs.
  • Assess camper files by reviewing provided camper medical documents such as medical history, allergies, and any specific health needs.
  • Monitor and track any health-related concerns or incidents and keep a detailed daily log of all visits to the nurse’s office.
  • Complete incident reports and communicate significant information to appropriate personnel.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding camper health updates, concerns, or incidents and contact and respond to phone calls within a timely manner.
  • Be prepared to respond to medical emergencies promptly and effectively.
  • Review all emergency procedures before the beginning of camp and become acquainted with how to respond.
  • Assist the camp in all ways possible, especially in the event of an emergency.
  • Keep the nurse station clean and sanitary.
  • Show compassion and warmth to campers and staff who are ill or injured and always treat campers and staff who enter the office with respect and empathy.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with agency staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere, and maintain courteous and professional working relationships with vendors and outside contacts of agency.
  • Maintains adherence to all company policies and procedures, including agency safety requirements.
  • Must work the days and hours to perform all assigned responsibilities and be punctual in meeting all performance requirements.

POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:

The position requires occasional internal interaction with employees, parents, supervisors, officers, board members, and other agency personnel and community members. You would be responsible for maintaining positive, courteous, and professional relationships with families and children enrolled in the youth and camp programs, all JCC staff, professional staff from other related agencies, and the greater community.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A LOVE for working with children and having fun!
  • Bachelor of Nursing Degree and certification with previous experience working with children required; pediatrics or community/school nursing background preferred.
  • Possess a valid State of Florida license to practice as a registered nurse.
  • Familiarity with DCF requirements or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to speak fluent English, understand it as well as read and write.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 75 lbs.), bending, stooping, stretching, squatting, and sitting.
  • Tasks may involve extended periods at a keyboard or workstation.
  • Must have visual and auditory ability to keep track of multiple campers and to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
  • Effective and clear communication is essential between campers and staff.
  • Ability to complete written paperwork such as notes home, incident reports, etc.
  • Noise level can be moderate to loud.
  • Occasional exposure to outside elements, such as sun exposure, heat, humidity, and rain.

  • COLLABORATIVE SKILLS You will receive on-the-ground, practical, real-life training in how to work with a team and help build the culture of your camp community.
  • CREATIVITY You will develop innovative and fun ways to engage an audience of 2 to 200.
