Days and Hours: Monday – Friday, 7am-4pm
This classification performs a variety of tasks relating to traffic data collection activities, crash reporting, traffic calming activities, data gathering equipment, etc. Responsibilities include conducting various traffic-related studies; assisting with the development of signing and marking plans; collecting, assembling and analyzing diverse traffic data; and preparing preliminary reports on traffic field investigations. Position also responds to concerns from the general public and makes preliminary field investigations to determine nature of problems.
Working Conditions
Indoor/outdoor situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 50 lbs. alone; up to 100 lbs. with assistance
Day in the Life:
The Traffic Data Technician I-III (DOQ) performs various tasks related to traffic engineering, operations, and safety. Typical tasks will involve performing field reviews, crash reviews and deploying traffic counters for traffic studies. Technicians produce AutoCAD exhibits for traffic calming projects, visual aids for presentations, signs and pavement marking plans. Technicians respond to residents and investigate traffic issues. In addition, traffic data technicians deploy speed radar trailers throughout the county to support speed management.
Essential Functions

All Levels:
Conducts traffic data collection activities.
Collects traffic data (i.e. volume counts, speed studies, turning movement data, etc.)
Conducts preliminary field investigations and traffic studies.
As instructed, compiles, organizes and reviews crash reports.
Operates turning movement boards for various transportation studies.
Deploys speed trailers throughout Manatee County used for traffic calming activities.
Analyzes crash data to produce collision diagrams and crash summaries.
Converts various traffic data into reports, charts and graphs.
Produces aerial and ground plans related to traffic problems and makes recommendations for improvements.
Assists supervisor with collection and compilation of traffic engineering data and other requests.
Responds to complaints, conducts preliminary investigations, and makes recommendation to supervisor.
Performs necessary calculations and computations for studies, verifies work, and prepares preliminary reports.
Creates condition diagrams to illustrate traffic conditions and traffic control devices.
Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
Technician level II:
Performs skilled technical work in the collection and analysis of traffic data (i.e., volume counts, speed studies, crash history, etc.); investigates studies for safety and efficient traffic flow; develops and maintains applicable databases; and prepares pertinent reports.
Compiles and/or reviews pertinent condition diagrams, sight distance measurements, crash history data and related field sketches to determine traffic problems; makes recommendations for improvement or corrections; prepares cost estimates.
Represents the department at Community Safety Team monthly meetings.
Technician level III:
Investigates citizen traffic issues and provides solutions.
Performs a variety of field and office investigations relative to traffic calming, vehicular and pedestrian counts, speed studies, origin and destination surveys, and flow and accident diagrams.
Schedules, coordinates and conducts traffic studies.
Reviews and evaluates work of assigned staff.
Reviews plans for traffic control and efficient traffic flow.
Meets with, and obtains pertinent information from, other public agencies, officials, and interested parties.
Participates in the analysis of data and preparation and presentation of related reports to facilitate transportation studies.
Prepares cost analysis of traffic engineering studies and measures their effectiveness. Generates and produces traffic signing and marking as well as signal plans.
Provides technical assistance to Project Engineers, Engineering Specialists and the public relative to developing and evaluating traffic operation alternatives.
Analyzes locations of high crash spots; segments and documents suitable counter measures; makes recommendations.
Utilizes AutoCAD to create aerial drawings to be used in the design of traffic signals, traffic calming measures, signing/striping plans, traffic related details and roadway improvement designs.
Serves in a lead capacity and assists with training and scheduling of other Technicians.
All Levels:
High school graduate/equivalent required.
Valid driver's license required with valid Florida driver license required within 30 days of hire.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Technician level II:
Minimum of three (3) years traffic data collection or traffic engineering experience.
IMSA Certification(s), may be required (in accordance with area of assignment).
Technician level III:
Minimum of six (6) years traffic data collection or traffic engineering experience.
Prior AutoCAD experience desired.
Technician level III:
Prior supervisory or lead experience desired.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to draw and read condition and other traffic related diagrams, plans, etc.
Ability to efficiently operate computers and traffic-related software applications associated with area of assignment.
Ability to lift, bend, sit and kneel for extended periods of time.
Ability to identify colors.
Knowledge of traffic engineering fundamentals.
Knowledge of fundamental mathematics (including geometry and algebra); and the ability to efficiently apply.
Ability to prepare clear and concise reports based on findings of studies.
Ability to draw appropriate conclusions from data collected.
Ability to comprehend IMSA standards and acquire certification(s) if required for area of assignment.
Technician level II:
Knowledge of and the ability to understand and explain the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices in relation to signs, markings, and signals.
Ability to make effective presentations to the public or public officials in a professional manner.
Ability to prepare concise reports and maintain accurate records related to area of assignment.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Technician level III:
Knowledge of modern principles, practices and procedures of traffic engineering.
Knowledge of and the ability to understand current traffic standards.
Knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, software applications related to traffic engineering.
Ability to prepare and present accurate statistical and comprehensive reports.
Ability to effectively review plans related to traffic safety and recommend appropriate changes.
Ability to effectively assign, direct and review work of assigned staff.
