Part-Time After School FLL Robotics Coach on Upper West Side

Looking for enthusiastic, experienced, and responsible First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Coach for our upcoming Winter/Spring 2024 semester. As an FLL Coach, you will guide and mentor students at a school on the Upper West Side, , ages 9 to 14, in the First Lego League (FLL) Robotics program. In this role you will:

• Lead weekly after school robotics workshops in which the students build Spike Prime robots that meet this year’s FLL challenge, from approximately 2:30pm to 5:30pm ($25-$30/hour based on expertise/experience).
• Ensure students are engaged and learning coding, AI, 3D design, and other STEM skills related to robotics.
• Prepare the team for regional and national competitions, fostering creativity, design thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and collaboration among the students.
• Oversee the team's progress in designing, building, and programming their Spike Prime robots for the FLL challenge. Follow the FLL curriculum and schedule to ensure that the team understands the program's core values, rules, and guidelines.
• Facilitate discussions and activities related to the FLL theme and project.
• Manage the team's schedule effectively, ensuring that they stay on track with the competition timeline and meet important milestones.
• Maintain open and clear communication with our team members, and your students, parents, and the school administration providing regular updates on the team's progress and addressing any concerns or challenges they may have.
• Encourage teamwork and collaboration among team members. Recognize and celebrate individual and team achievements, promoting a positive and supportive learning environment.

Qualifications

• Experience managing and teaching children ages 9-14
• English verbal and written language proficiency required
• Bachelor's degree (or working towards one) in a relevant field (e.g., STEM education, engineering, computer science) or equivalent experience in robotics and programming.
• Prior experience coaching or mentoring students in robotics, engineering, or STEM-related activities is preferred.
• Knowledge of the First Lego League program and competition rules is advantageous.
• Strong passion for STEM education and inspiring young learners to explore and excel in these fields.
• Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
• Proven problem-solving and critical thinking abilities, with a focus on fostering creative thinking in students.
• Flexible, patient, and supportive, with the ability to adapt to the needs and learning styles of diverse learners.
• Ability to maintain consistent and professional communications and record-keeping via phone, email, and Google Drive
• Ability to travel throughout NYC for work and be on time every day
• Ability to commit to the entire semester of work
• Instructors with NYSED licensure on any grade level and a passion for makerspace and digital arts/media are preferred but not necessary
• IMPORTANT: You will be required to be fingerprinted and background-checked and attend a one-day training prior to teaching, in most cases. Your background check will be paid for.
