Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 24,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer) ). Make the Road New York is in a bargain agreement with National Organization of Legal Services Workers (NOLSW). 

MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation, and in-school and after school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more." 

The Development and Communications Department is a 14-person team that supports the organization’s vast fundraising and communications operations. Our communications reach includes traditional media, social media, digital and hard copy materials, and video to elevate our members’ voices, build public support and raise money.

Current Opening:

Make the Road New York (MRNY) seeks a Digital Organizer to work with its Development & Communications team to assist with its digital organizing work to elevate the voices of its members online and advance its policy goals. The Digital Organizer will lead the digital campaign to create a permanent fund for workers excluded from state and federal unemployment relief and as well as work on other organizing priorities for the organization. The Digital Organizer will work closely with senior staff, be part of a fast-paced Communications Team and report directly to the Senior Digital Organizer. Work on the Fund Excluded Workers campaign will be closely coordinated with MRNY’s Workplace Justice Lead Organizer and Fund Excluded Workers Coalition Campaign Coordinator. 

This position is ideal for an ambitious go-getter with a deep commitment to social justice, interest or experience in media work, and strong persuasive writing and communication skills. A good candidate would be able to thrive both in team settings and in independent work, be highly self-motivated, and able to multi-task, organize, plan, prioritize, and perform assigned duties with minimal supervision. 

MRNY is a large, multi-faceted organization, and this position requires flexibility, a positive attitude, impeccable time management skills, rigorous attention to detail, and the ability to handle many tasks and manage competing priorities. This position will be hybrid for now, with some days working from home, and working from the office as needed by the organization, as well as covering in-person rallies and press conferences. In the future, this position will require working mostly in person.

Key Responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Developing and executing online organizing campaign strategy tied to our grassroots organizing efforts to create a permanent fund for excluded workers and other campaigns; 
  • Daily social media posting in English and Spanish with content from organizers—including in-person coverage of events; 
  • Facilitating and managing regular communication strategy calls with coalition partners. 
  • Creating and managing email blasts, online petitions, and social media advertising campaigns; 
  • Developing and executing digital ads that complement MRNY’s offline organizing. 
  • Creating graphics and visual content to communicate our message; 
  • Training and supporting the Fund Excluded Workers Coalition and MRNY staff and members on how to best use social media tools to elevate our core messages; 
  • Attending and supporting the execution of organizational events and providing real-time content (e.g., live-tweeting, Facebook livestream) to elevate the organization’s work. 
  • Building digital partnerships with other like-minded organizations; 
  • Translating English materials into Spanish and translating Spanish materials into English; 
  • Acting as a digital liaison for the organization on social media platforms, and as a spokesperson if needed; and 
  • Managing and analyzing key metrics to measure the performance of the Fund Excluded Coalition and MRNY’s digital work. 
  • Engaging with members to help share their stories, especially on social media

Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in the U.S 
  • Required to be fully vaccinated with an FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior first day of employment. 
  • Possess a commitment to collective action and community organizing. 
  • Have experience working in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic work environment
  • One year of experience using social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram) to advance social justice campaigns.
  • Strong writing, editing, communications and presentation skills. 
  • A high degree of comfort in managing multiple tasks and deadlines, and working in a fluid and fast-paced environment. 
  • Commitment to social and economic justice, collaborative processes, and the participation and leadership of low-income people of color, immigrants, and their organizations. 
  • Extensive knowledge of (or experience of) immigration and the challenges faced by immigrant, Black, and Latinx communities. 
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, including the ability to write and copy edit public materials strongly preferred. 

Preferred: 

  • Experience working in a Communications department: writing public-facing materials (email blasts, social media posts, press releases, etc.) and working on digital campaigns that complement offline efforts. 
  • Knowledge of other key issue areas such as workers’ rights and economic justice.

  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and complete assignments under strict deadlines with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment. 
  • Ability to work under pressure required. 
  • Have a working knowledge of spreadsheets, Microsoft Office suite, and using a database (ideally Salesforce) to run reports. 
  • Flexible work schedule, some evenings or weekends required 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • High level of accountability and initiative; needs to be a self-starter and eager to do team work to support the organization as a whole

A basic familiarity with some of the following or their related counterparts will be major assets to this position, but not all are required:

  • Basic HTML and website management experience. 
  • Basic graphic design (Canva, Adobe Spark, inDesign) 
  • Basic video editing and photo (iMovie, Premiere Rush, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop) 
  • Basic knowledge of digital campaign software and CRMs: Salesforce, NationBuilder, Pardot, Action Network, Phone2Action 
  • Basic knowledge of Facebook ads. 
  • Knowledge of the following social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. 
  • Experience running digital campaigns.

Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education. MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The salary range for this position is from $49,023 to $66,370.
