Position Title: Soup Kitchen: Cook & Volunteer Organizer

Corps/Department: The Salvation Army, Sitka Corps

Reports To: Sitka Corps Officers

FLSA Status: Part-Time; Non-Exempt

Scope of Position: The Soup Kitchen: Cook & Volunteer Organizer is responsible for coordinating volunteers to cook and fill in to cook as needed. The Soup Kitchen: Cook & Volunteer Organizer will assist the Corps Officers to create, prepare, serve a well-balanced and attractive meal service for clients each weekday. The Soup Kitchen: Cook & Volunteer Organizer also entails acquiring volunteers to assist with preparing/serving meals Monday through Friday. This position requires the ability to maintain the confidentiality of all clients served and to always show dignity and respect to the clients.

Education and Work Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • Minimum of one year experience as a Cook.
  • Previous kitchen management experience preferred.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and deal with interruptions in a busy environment.
  • Current Serve Safe certificate or willing to acquire within 60 days.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to lead the work of volunteers.
  • Current Alaska driver’s license with acceptable driving and criminal history records.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinate with the Corps Officers in menu preparation, receiving donations, ordering, and storing food.
  • Prepare the appropriate foods, hot or cold, in a timely fashion according to the weekly meal plan.
  • Assist in the serving of meals to clients.
  • Assure all foods are stored in a safe and sanitary manner, to include dates and labeling of usable food items for future use.
  • Assure food is held at proper temperature so that bacterial growth is prohibited and keep accurate temperature records.
  • Uses appropriate chemicals for cleaning and sanitation.
  • Wash pots and pans using the three-pot sink method for cleaning and sanitizing dinnerware, utensils, and the like.
  • Clean and sanitize all equipment used daily, keep the entire area neat and clean. Sweep and mop floors, as directed.
  • Clean, sanitize, and organize freezer and refrigerator.
  • Report equipment failures, breakages, or other kitchen/dining area to the Corps Officers, in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for notifying the Corps Officers on duty of any problems or concerns related to stock levels and food spoilage.
  • Helps the Corps Officers recruit and schedule volunteers for the Soup Kitchen.
  • Supervise and give direction to volunteers in the Soup Kitchen.
  • Ensure volunteers are properly trained in sanitation and safety protocols.
  • Help clients shop food pantry before getting their food.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a well-lit, heated, and ventilated environment, although water and humidity are constant due to dish washing and food preparation. Exposure to slippery floors and hot surfaces will be present. The noise level is generally low; equipment noises generally will be intermittent.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push/pull objects, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to see and hear at normal ranges with corrective devices, if necessary.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to understand and produce written and verbal information.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle in daylight, darkness, and in inclement weather conditions.

Qualified individuals must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation. Equipment Used: Employee must be able to operate equipment associated with work such as: stoves, ovens, steamers and steam tables, toasters, freezers, mixers, coffee and beverage machines, cutlery and other kitchen tools, dishwashers, blenders, computers, calculators, copiers, fax machines, audio/visual equipment, and telephones.

Language Skills: Must be able to understand, follow and give both written and oral instructions and be comfortable working with diverse individuals in face-to-face contact and over the telephone. The employee must be able to use speech and hearing for ordinary and telephone conversation.

Mathematical Skills: Must be able to perform simple calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical situations.

Performance Skills: Must be punctual, organized, self-motivated, flexible, and possess a desire to learn and assist those he/she interacts with.

Sacred Boundaries and Protect the Mission: Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Check required by The Salvation Army for employment.
