Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District is Hiring a Help Desk Intern Near Madison, WI

The Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District, located in Madison, has a history of excellence in STEM, innovation, and sustainability, and is pleased to announce our 2024 Summer Internship Program. This program is an excellent opportunity for enrolled university and technical college students to gain valuable experience in their field of interest while making an impact on the organization and our local communities, enhancing the quality of our water. The District strives to have a workforce that reflects the communities we serve, and we encourage women and people of color to apply for these internships.
For all positions at the District, we have enhanced and exceeded safety precautions for all essential operations. Some positions will require the intern to be in the lab, office or field and will be clearly labeled as such on the job postings. We’ll provide interns with training and experience with virtual collaboration tools and remote work as needed. Each intern will work with a supervisor and will be provided professional development training, participate in networking events, and attend meetings, either virtually or in-person as conditions allow.

Established in 1930 to protect the lakes and streams of the upper Yahara watershed, the District is a wastewater collection and treatment utility serving about 429,000 people in 24 Madison-area owner communities covering about 187 square miles. Organized as a municipal corporation, the District is governed by a nine-member Commission appointed by the communities we serve.The District owns and operates 145 miles of pipe and 18 regional pumping stations that convey approximately 37 million gallons of wastewater to the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant daily. Through the treatment process, we recover valuable resources from the wastewater we receive before returning clean water to the environment. Our mission is to protect public health and the environment. The IT Helpdesk Intern will provide support for the District's IT services. As an IT Helpdesk Intern you will have an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in helpdesk services, learning more about the larger technology infrastructure at the District’s treatment plant, while also making an impact on the organization. 

JOB DUTIES 
  • Provide help desk services, including responding to user inquiries for assistance via phone calls, Spiceworks help desk tickets, emails, and walk-up requests
  • Provide initial technology troubleshooting, and when needed, document steps for resolution
  • Recognize and escalate difficult problems to the next level of support
  • Setup and configure hardware and software using documentation and/or as instructed
  • Assist with desktop imaging, maintaining images, customizing user devices, and assisting users with their technology
  • Assist with setup and support of conferencing technology
  • Provide support for Office 365 and Microsoft Teams
  • Assist network administrators with support related to server maintenance, user accounts, remote work connections, and wireless network management
  • Assist the network team with recordkeeping, housekeeping, and organization of technology supplies in support areas, server rooms, and data closets
  • Maintain high standards for customer service, timely response, collaboration, and open communication
  • Maintain confidentiality with regards to the information found on District networks and technology
REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be enrolled in a 2- or 4-year degree program and have completed at least 1 semester within an information technology-related discipline
  • Must be available to work on site at the plant offices. Occasional remote work may be possible depending on the project or circumstances.
  • Fundamental understanding of laptop and desktop computers, Microsoft Office setup, Microsoft Windows configurations, network concepts, and technology security 
  • Able to learn, adopt, and maintain technology security practices
  • Able to communicate effectively with both non-technical and technical people
  • Enthusiasm for technology and solving technology related challenges
  • Excellent problem-solving, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Must be able to lift 30lbs unassisted
  • Ability to maintain a safe and clean working environment 
  • Respect and appreciation for diversity and inclusion
  • Positive attitude, enthusiasm, and motivation to do quality work, independently and as a team member
HOURS & LOCATION
  • The ideal candidate would be available to work a full 40 hours per week at the plant offices location during the summer and have a valid driver's license.
Applicants must be enrolled in a 2- or 4-year college, either as an undergraduate (sophomore or above) or graduate student. Interns must be able to work full-time during the summer, either on-site or remotely – some positions may offer the opportunity to work part-time during the academic year.Candidates pursuing degrees directly related to their desired internship will be given preference in being invited to interview.Ideal candidates
