Purpose of Position:
Under the direction of the Director of Employee Relations, this position will help to support and coach employees, principals, managers and supervisors on a variety of employment relations practices and in compliance with MMSD policies, local and federal employment laws, business practices while ensuring this is performed in an equitable, fair and consistent manner. This position serves as a business partner in conflict resolution, corrective action administration, investigations, policy interpretation and performance management. This position serves as a collaborative business partner with all departments and schools within MMSD and trusted leader. Supervisory Responsibilities: none
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist and guide in resolving problems and conflicts before they escalate.
Coach, guide and assist with corrective action administration be a fair, equitable and consistent consultant in regards to the elements of just cause and due process.
Assist in the informal and formal complaint process; ensure confidentiality, ensure protections, create an investigatory plan, assist with investigatory interview questions, review findings. Lead workplace bullying complaints.
Support and assist district staff and Administration in misconduct investigations including creating investigatory plans, investigations, timelines, findings and determinations.
Consults and collaborates regularly with the Director of Employee Relations, Legal Services and District Leadership and employees.
Prepares comprehensive and analytical written reports for the Director of Employee Relations, Executive of Human Resources and Legal as requested.
Consults, provides resources and assists in developing and implementing plans of improvement for employees identified in need of developmental plans.
Provides guidance on and development of HR/ER; policies and procedures.
Assists in writing and reviewing standard operating procedures, templates, and ER processes.
Analyzes HR/Employment relations data and helps to creates metrics.
Provides support to District administrators, managers, and supervisors in recommending training areas covering cultural competence, equal opportunity, and diversity and inclusion. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent work experience.
Culturally competent; ability to communicate with and effectively engage in cultural dialog, cultural self-assessment and diversity, equity and inclusion
Ability to build professional relationships with diverse cultures supporting external and internal stakeholders
Strong skills in the areas of conflict resolution, problem solving techniques, interviewing, and investigation
Knowledge of the principles of just cause and due process
Knowledge and ability to lead investigation with equity and inclusion lens
Ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity
Ability to maintain a culture of trust, maintain effective professional relationships with all colleagues
Ability to function as lead investigator on large scale investigation cases, as required
Previous experience with Employee Handbook, Collective Bargaining Agreements, etc. preferred
Prior experience working in K12 educational institutions and/or public sector
Knowledge of computer systems Microsoft Office Suite, google , social media platforms, zoom, etc.
1 year of employment relations experience preferred preferably in the public sector realm
Knowledge of federal and state laws related to employment relations
Length of Work:
Full time, 12 month work year
Working Conditions:
Ability to work under general safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors is minimal and poses little to no risk of injury.
Tasks are regularly performed in safe and comfortable surroundings without exposure to adverse environmental conditions
Willingness to travel to schools on occasion as needed
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
