23-24 - Black Hawk - SEA Medically Fragile - .875 FTE (35 HPW) - 1 Year Position

Medically-fragile Special Education Assistants provide assistance to students with a variety of complex health conditions that impact engagement, participation, and performance across all learning environments in the inclusive school and community settings. Duties may include, but are not limited to: wheelchair mobility and maneuvering, positioning, transferring and or lifting with or without mechanical assistance, feeding with or without adaptive assistance , delegated medical procedures, delegated medication administration, bathrooming, diapering, documentation and maintenance of daily procedure or treatment records, and assisting with the instructional program using instructional materials that are adapted to meet the needs of students from 3-21 years of age.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Candidates must have a high school diploma and have completed the MMSD Medically Fragile SEA Training.
Must have experience working with children.
Must have the ability to walk, lift (up to 50 lbs.), climb stairs, bend, reach, extend, and kneel within the context of performing job duties. Agree with 50 lbs
Applicants who wish to work with disabled children are required to obtain a Special Education Program Aide license issued by the Department of Public Instruction. The cost of this license is $100 and will be paid by MMSD. DPI may require you to complete fingerprint cards if you have lived out of state in the past 20 years, which may incur an extra cost to you.
AHA BLS CPR/AED for HCP Certification is required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire and maintained on an annual basis.
Increase knowledge of Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
Increase understanding of how family dynamics play a role in caring for a medically fragile student.
Understand the roles and responsibilities of a student’s Individualized Education Program team members, IEP and evacuation plans.
Demonstrate strong communication skills with staff, students & families.
Understand the boundaries of social media.
Be familiar with the social/emotional & safety needs of a student with complex health needs.
Enhance knowledge of the levels of functioning, partial participation and independence that students with complex health needs can achieve.
Utilize assistive technology to enhance student communication and performance.
Understand the chain of infection: demonstrate proper hand hygiene and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to use for diapering, suctioning, feeding, and for any other blood or bodily fluid exposure per MMSD guidelines.
Consistently demonstrates proper use of adaptive equipment and safe body mechanics when working with students with mobility needs on a daily basis and in emergency situations according to MMSD guidelines.
Enhance knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology of organ systems and system-related acute and chronic health conditions to understand effect on student’s abilities.
Complete medication administration training, procedural/skills training, and daily documentation according to MMSD guidelines.
Perform prompt, high quality CPR (including choking) and initiate early use of an AED individually and in a team situation.
Increase knowledge of Medically Fragile SEA role with experiences shared by current Medically Fragile SEAs working with (MMSD) students with complex health needs.
Desired Qualifications
Fluency in Spanish is highly desired
