The Maclay Upper School English Department seeks a full-time teacher for the 2024-25 school year. Primary responsibilities will include teaching sections of English 1 (Honors) and/or English 2 (Honors), with the possibility of teaching journalism.
Our English 1 course serves as an introduction to all English courses in the upper school and includes literature units, grammar units, and composition units (on literary analysis, personal narrative, and comparison). Anchor texts in the course include the following: The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Oedipus the King by Sophocles, a selection of classic and contemporary poetry, The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Night by Elie Wiesel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Julius Caesar by Shakespeare.
Our English 2 course focuses on world and British literature, grammar instruction, and composition (with units on personal narrative, definition, comparison, and argumentation/research). Anchor texts in the course include the following: 40 Model Essays edited by Aaron and Repetto, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney, Macbeth by Shakespeare, Throne of Blood directed by Akira Kurosawa, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, a collection of Romantic poetry, and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe.
Our Journalism (Newspaper) course focuses on the production of the Maclay Upper School newspaper the Andalusian, for both print and online editions.

The ideal candidate will have several years of teaching experience and an advanced degree, for the Maclay English Department is a thriving community of scholars, writers, and teachers. Significant experience in the teaching of formal, academic writing is a necessity, as is a willingness to embrace a student-centered, rigorous approach to the discipline. Someone who views learning and becoming as lifelong pursuits and who believes that literature and writing have the power to transform students into empathetic, critically optimistic people will find a supportive, dynamic environment at Maclay.
