Brief DescriptionThe Associate/Assistant Director of Engagement serves as an active member of the Engagement team responsible for sustaining and strengthening connections between the college and alumni, families, donors, and friends. The Associate Director is primarily responsible for the programs that facilitate the connection between the campus, community, and core Luther constituencies and furthers progress toward Luther’s identified institutional priorities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manage parent & family engagement. Collaborate with colleagues in the Provost’s Division and Admissions to offer programs for current and prospective parents that contribute to student recruitment and retention. Recruit, facilitate, and steward volunteers for the parents and family council. In collaboration with development colleagues, develop current and past-parent solicitation strategies.
  • Develop and implement a strategy for regional alumni and friends gatherings that furthers identified institutional priorities. Identify areas with high-impact engagement potential. Align alumni and development regional events with existing campus activities, such as athletics and music tours. Coordinate and evaluate events. Recruit, support, and steward alumni & friend volunteers.
  • In collaboration with Admissions and Student Success, coordinate initiatives that involve alumni and parents in student recruitment and retention. This includes, but is not limited to: parent engagement in Admissions events and outreach, and joint programming with the Career Center, Student Success, and the Center for Intercultural Engagement and Support.
  • Manage Decorah-based events and engagement, including semi-annual happy hours, alumni & development activities at Nordic Fest, and other programs that cultivate relations hips with local constituencies, as aligned with institutional priorities. Plan, coordinate, and market the events, in collaboration with staff and volunteers. Facilitate relationships with local volunteers and collaborate with development colleagues to identify, develop, and steward volunteers and donors.
  • Align cross-institutional efforts to engage with alumni and other core constituencies like parents and families and the Decorah community. Partner with faculty and staff across campus to find efficiencies and opportunities in outreach. Ensure coordination and collaboration to maximize impact.
  • Complete electronic call reports on a weekly basis, and maintain and update database systems, Luther files, and data generated from new contacts.
  • Participate in department and college events (i.e. Homecoming, Christmas at Luther, Parents & Family Weekend, etc.); attend training and professional development programs as directed by the office.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Development office through teamwork and collaboration.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships between the Development office and other campus departments and programs. Contribute to a positive and pleasant work environment.
  • Promote a professional and positive image of the college in the community and among its constituents and serve as an advocate for the college and its mission.
  • Promote, uphold, and exemplify the college’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Adhere to the AFP Code of Ethical Standards and the Donor Bill of Rights.
  • Assist the Director of Engagement in other duties as they arise.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS:Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree minimum; Degree from a liberal-arts college desired.
Experience:
  • 3-5 years of experience in development, fundraising, project management, event management, or related fields.
  • Proven success in facilitating volunteer networks, event planning, and program management.
  • Ability to lead projects to completion, and to plan and set meaningful objectives.
  • Ability to analyze results.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to lead, develop, and motivate individuals and teams.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates initiative, creativity, and ability to get results.
  • Exudes enthusiasm, confidence, flexibility, and integrity.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of constituents in order to develop relationships between them and the College.

  • Ability to clearly represent the mission and vision of Luther College.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the college.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Physical demands and environmental conditions: Work performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment. Involves sitting for a long period of time, standing, and walking in a well-lighted and well-ventilated office.
  • This position may be required to travel regionally and work evenings and/or weekends as necessary to support Engagement/Development events and programming.
