Responsibilities

• Registered Nurses practicing as first assistants in surgery are functioning in an expanded perioperative nursing role.
• First assisting activities are further executed within the context of the nursing process and in accordance with the State Board of Nursing Practice and institutional policies.
• RNFA activities commonly include: assisting the surgeon with exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intra-operative technical functions under the supervision of a surgeon.
• Other activities may include certain delegated medical functions that can be assumed by the RN who is qualified to practice as an RNFA.
• A RN license is required as well as RNFA Certification through the AORN Training/Certification Program.

Qualifications

Job Requirements: 

• Minimum: Associate’s Degree in Nursing or Diploma of Nursing and RNFA Certification through AORN
• Minimum: 3 years of RN experience and 2 years of RNFA experience. The 2 years of RNFA experience may be part of the 3 years of RN experience
• Valid NM Nursing license.
• Require BLS. Successful completion of an RNFA program through AORN with Certification.

Preferred Job Requirements: 

• Preferred: Technical training as a Scrub Nurse or Scrub Technician
