Responsibilities

  • May be the Radiation Safety Officer if the PHD Physicist is not
  • Supervises dosimetrist, radiation therapy technologists, biomedical engineers, and specialists in physics related activities.

  • Performs calibration checks and safety surveys of Linacs and other sources of radiation (for example: HDR Systems).

  • Assists the brachytherapy program including:
    • Simulation, supervision and film acceptance
    • Preparation of radioactive sources
    • Radiation survey and protection
    • Computer dosimetry
    • Loading and unloading whenever scheduled
  • Assists in developing, purchasing and acceptance specifications for therapy equipment (examples: linacs, simulators, treatment planning systems, hyperthermia equipment,e tc.) Assists in the acceptance testing of such equipment and in the shielding analysis of treatment rooms.

  • Develops, implements, supervises and participates in quality control programs in therapy department.

  • Consults with radiologist and radiation oncologist concerning patients and fetal dose determinations.

  • Participates in planning of future facilities.
  • Researches and develops new devices and modalities for improved therapeutic use of radiation.

  • Maintains professional contact with peers through attendance at professional meetings and similar activities.

  • Is periodically on call for night-time or week-end duty.
  • May be asked to participate in yearly review of Dosimetrists in the physics group

  • Participates in the radiation safety program.
  • Helps develop department policies and procedures.
  • Consults with other physicians and patients regarding radiation exposure and safety.
  • Is expected to lift heavy items from time to time (lead blocks, cerrobend blocks, 30-40 lb source containers, water phantom tanks, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Physics or a closely related allied science
  • 3 years experience
  • Board certification (ABR, ABMP, or equivalent) 
  • BLS

  • Eligible to become Authorized Medical Physicist (AMP) for Gammaknife Icon and Varian HDR (prior AMP status preferred).
  • Experience with Mosaiq, Varian linacs, Tomotherapy, Pinnacle, Brachyvision, Radcalc, and intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) with Zeiss Intrabeam.
