Job Description:
Pennington Biomedical Research Center
, a world-renowned academic research institute of Louisiana State University, is seeking a Phlebotomy and Accessioning Lab Manager in Clinical Chemistry.
The Manager of Phlebotomy and Accessioning will perform and provide direct supervision to staff performing both pre-analytical and post-analytical sample collection and processing activities in support of clinical research trials. The manager s responsible for supervision of personnel and daily operations of the department and ensures that all processes within the department are performed and documented according to the established SOP’s.
This position is responsible for the ongoing management of staff, which will include, but not be limited to, training and competency assessment, ensuring appropriate work scheduling, partnering with staff to create and execute personal development plans, and participating with the laboratory manager in conducting performance reviews. The manager will also assist in the assessment of staffing levels to ensure adequate laboratory capacity and effective resource allocations, and will participate in the recruitment and hiring of new employees.
Job Responsibilities
  • Performs complex and highly technical tasks associated with specimen collection, processing, transport, and storage under a variety of experimental conditions.
  • Transports, processes, stores, and ships laboratory specimens according to laboratory requisition and laboratory manual instructions.
  • Recognizes sample and/or requisition inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Provides assistance to laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems.
  • Prepares and applies chemical additives to specimens in order to preserve specimen integrity.
  • Packages biological specimens and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations for domestic and international shipments to referral laboratories and sponsor contracted central laboratories.
  • Participates in the laboratory’s quality improvement program. Assists in the collection of quality improvement data. Implements corrective action as directed.
  • Assists with developing study specific collection kits, specimen shipping documents, and shipping materials for external collection sites shipping specimens to the Clinical Chemistry Core.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a biological science or related field.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a clinical or research laboratory environment or general experience in an academic or analytical laboratory environment.
  • Two (2) years of leadership experience in a clinical or research laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Current license by the Louisiana Board of Medical Examiner’s as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist – Technician (CLS-T) preferred.
