JOB STATEMENT

The Licensed Vocational Nurse provides basic nursing care (under supervision) to adult, pediatric, geriatric, and obstetric patients.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares patients for examinations, tests, or treatments and explain procedures.
  • Provides patients with teaching and informational material to take home, documenting such training and materials in patients’ records.
  • Completes pre-screening questionnaires for each patient.
  • Measures and records patients' vital signs, such as height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, or respiration.
  • Collects samples, such as blood, urine, or sputum and perform routine laboratory tests on samples.
  • Assesses the immunization status and needs of patients and looks for contraindications to receiving vaccines.
  • Administers vaccines safely to patients, using proper route of delivery and vaccine handling, and documenting such vaccines in patients’ records.
  • Monitors for and manages vaccine adverse events per guidelines.
  • Provides phone support in answering patient inquiries or following-up with discharge teaching.
  • Maintains adequate vaccine and supply levels, orders vaccines, rotates stock, and stores vaccines as recommended.
  • Serves as vaccine coordinator; monitors vaccine temperature ranges and adjusts temperature as needed.
  • Assists with various audits and reports to include documentation.
  • Sterilizes equipment and supplies, using germicides, sterilizer, or autoclave.
  • Properly disposes of sharps and biological wastes.
  • Develops and maintains good working relationships with other community agencies.
  • Trains and verifies competencies of other LVN and or Medical Assistants
  • Functions in collaborative practice with physician(s) and/or nurse practitioner(s) in physician practice or clinic setting.
  • Provide comprehensive ambulatory nursing care as directed by physician(s) and/or nurse practitioner(s), including patient and family assessment, intervention, and education.
  • Prepares and dispenses medication orally or by injection under the supervision of medical provider.
  • Performs other tasks as required by management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education:
    • Practical or Vocational Nursing degree
  • Specialized Training/Certifications/Licenses:
    • Texas LVN or LPN License (or equivalent nursing compact state license).
    • Current CPR Certification.
  • Experience:
    • 1 yr. preferred
  • Knowledge:
    • Bilingual – Fluent in both English and Spanish
  • Skills:
    • Computer Literacy
    • Patient-Centered Orientation
    • Cooperation
    • Confidentiality
  • Abilities:
    • Must be able to speak, read, write, and comprehend the English language.
    • Ability to stand/walk for majority of the shift.
    • Must be able to bend or stoop.
    • Must be able to lift 20 lbs. unassisted
    • Must be able to physically assist patients that may be in physical distress, fainting/falling or provide general assistance if mobility of patient is impaired.
    • Must have good vision (e.g. near acuity and depth perception)
  • Other:
    • Must be able to work on Saturdays.
    • May require some local travel between different clinic locations.
    • Must be able to maintain CPR and immunizations as required by the organization.
