Los Alamos Public Schools is Hiring a 2024 25 Native American Liaison Posting 154 Near Los Alamos, NM

SUMMARY:

To coordinate and implement programs, services, and opportunities to meet the unique needs of our current, returning, and prospective Los Alamos Public Schools Native American student body. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support services for Native American students, K-12, to help them succeed academically in alignment with the Title VII goals, objectives, and activities and comply with the LAPS Indian Education policies. 
  • Maintain and actively solicit Title VII Student Eligibility Certification Form ED 506 for all eligible Native American students.
  • Research and implement culturally sensitive instructional resources that may be used by all current and incoming LAPS staff. 
  • Communicate effectively with Tribal leaders and educational departments whose students are represented within LAPS to provide educational planning, academic advising, cultural advocacy, and guidance. 
  • Develop and engage in proactive advising and early alert initiatives; monitor student success and failure and work to overcome barriers.
  • Conduct workshops in collaboration with Los Alamos High School Career Resource Center and assist with financial opportunities such as FAFSA, scholarships, and internships.
  • Create and conduct an orientation program in collaboration with LAPS school district for incoming Native American students. 
  • Support and nurture a welcoming and culturally sound environment for Native American students within Los Alamos Public Schools. 
  • Advocate for and collaborate with Native American clubs at the Middle and High School.
  •  Increase visibility and campus awareness of current events relevant to Native American issues through planning events, forums, conferences, and collaborations. 
  •  Attend all conferences/meetings, where LAPS students need representation. (i.e. – Parent Advisory Committee, LAPS District Parent meetings, LAPS Board meetings, OIE meetings) 
  •  Ensure LAPS Policy 6147 is supported 
  • Actively seek and maintain grants that provide funding for Indian Education by collecting data regularly, and providing quarterly written reports. 
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of Indian education programs, as well as American Indian culture and heritage
  •  Demonstrated history of successful overseeing or development of Indian Education grant(s)
  •  Demonstrated success at designing and implementing professional development around the success of Native American student achievement
  •  Knowledge of state and federal laws relative to Native Americans 
  • Experience with Indian Education programs or Indian community organizations is preferred
  •  Effective verbal and written communication skills
  •  Ability to understand and maintain confidentiality
  •  Strong time management and organization skills
  • Able to attend work regularly and report to work on time

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE:

  • B.A. degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or related field
