POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for the organization, administration, supervision in the area of the school district transportation system in accordance with state law and policies along with school district policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Organizes and implements a pupil transportation system for special education students within the policies of the Board of Education.
  • Prepares transportation payroll information.
  • Periodically checks the driving records of all bus drivers in order to assure student safety.
  • Keeps records for preparation of state and local reports such as inventories, pupils transported, route mileage, time records, special trip records, traffic accidents and other required reports.
  • Makes recommendations that may improve transportation services and efficiency such as rules and regulations for drivers and pupil conduct.
  • Maintains safety standards in conformance with State and insurance regulations and develops a program of preventative safety.
  • Responsible for supporting the developement of bus routes and schedules.
  • Conforms with all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
  • Interprets transportation procedure and regulations to public and staff.
  • Conducts driver education program for school bus driver.
  • Approves bus stops in as safe a location as possible.
  • Responsible for maintaining the bus fleet in accordance with guidelines provided by the Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan State Police.
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of parts for maintenance and repair of all vehicles.
  • Ensure that all school bus drivers meet all applicable federal, state and Department of Education requirements.
  • Recruits, trains and supervises transportation personnel and makes recommendations on their employment, transfer, promotion and release.
  • Approves field trips and CBI's (Center based instruction).
  • Cooperates with school principals and others responsible for planning special school trips.
  • Develops and maintains lists of children eligible for transportation.
  • Acts as a liaison with parents for complaints and special requests.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages bus drivers and sub/aide drivers; responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of these employees.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws; responsibilities include:
    • interviewing, hiring and training employees;
    • planning, assigning and directing work;
    • appraising performance;
    • rewarding and disciplining employees;
    • addressing complaints and resolving problems.
    • Facilitate monthly safety meetings.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED), three years’ experience as a bus driver, and current qualifications to drive a school bus.
  • PREFERED: Michigan School Business Offical certification in Transportation. Knowledge of transportation routing systems.

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

Ability to type accurately. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal and mainframe computer and related software. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is almost continuously required to sit, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk and stand. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and continuously will repeat the same hand, arm or finger motion many times as in typing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Occasionally, yet essential to this position, the individual must meet deadlines with severe time constraints, interacting with the public and other workers. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours, direct responsibility for the safety, well-being or work output of other people ad meet multiple demands from several people.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is continuously interacting with the staff.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment.
