Description

Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment for patrons and staff. The Custodian will perform a broad range of cleaning activities and general building repairs, while also assisting colleagues with event setups, teardowns, and cleanup.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Cleans and maintains library facilities. Vacuums and cleans carpets. Sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, polishes, and buffs floors. Dusts any woodwork, polishes brass, and cleans glass surfaces as needed. Cleans spills and takes care of other janitorial tasks as required.
• Assists other Facilities personnel with any general building repair work, including general plumbing needs, electrical tasks (including light bulb changing), in-house construction projects and painting projects.
• Assists with special event setups, teardowns, and cleanup as needed.
• Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of custodial maintenance.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 1-3 years of consistent work experience. Prior custodial or housekeeping experience while preferrable is not required.
• Basic computer knowledge including the use of the internet and the ability to learn and use Microsoft Outlook e-mail program is required.

Required Skills/Abilities

Applicant must be dependable, well-organized, and able to complete assigned tasks consistently and completely with minimal direct supervision.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours a week. The regular schedule will either be 6:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Alternate schedules and after-hour work is occasionally required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Custodian’s work will primarily occur within a typical office and library-setting. Outside work may be required from time to time. Remote work is not offered for this position.

The position involves bending, pushing loaded carts, working on ladders, and scaffolding, overhead reaching, walking, lifting moderate weight (up to 50 pounds) and kneeling. Outside work may be required from time to time.
