The Flex High Advantage

The School Counselorutilizes leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote the social, emotional, and academic development of students, provides preventative services, and responds to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses personal, social, academic, and career development for all students. This position will consult, collaborate, and communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs. This position reports to the Principal or Designee.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

  • Reviews transcripts and evaluates course credits; co-develops and implements student scheduling, career-technical education, Educational Development Plans (EDP), and college counseling.
  • Monitors students’ overall academic performance and collaborate with school leadership, staff members to develop necessary academic supports for students and advise student on credits required to successfully meet graduation requirements.
  • Uses available Technology/community resources to enhance school counseling program and collects and analyzes data related to student academic performance, attendance, and behavior to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Consults with individual students/parents to discuss academic gaps and research potential supports or interventions.
  • Delivers core curriculum lessons that equip students with the necessary test-taking, time management and/or organization tools to be successful.
  • Advises students on dual enrollment opportunities and/or early/middle college opportunities.
  • Through classroom, small group, and individual student planning, assists students in developing a post-secondary plan.
  • Delivers career assessments and core curriculum lessons that assist students in identifying personal characteristics that lead to potential career opportunities.
  • Assists students in post-secondary research to identify training/educational opportunities that lead to the necessary skills/certifications/licensure to pursue a career.
  • Facilitates college representative visits, military exploration opportunities and financial aid workshops/assistance for students and parents, as well as organizing and delivering college fairs.
  • Advises students on potential Career and Technical Education opportunities that provide them with career exploration, work-based learning experiences and opportunities to earn certifications and credentials leading to entry-level employment.
  • Observes, evaluates and intervenes regarding student's performance, classroom behavior, social development and physical health.
  • Provides responsive services to meet the needs of students, including individual, group and crisis response counseling.
  • Assists students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.
  • Provides assistance and leadership with conflict resolution and crisis intervention to students when difficult situations occur at school or home.
  • Connects students and families with community resources through referrals.
  • Assists students in developing healthy coping strategies for successful school and life transitions.
  • Assists students in developing interpersonal communication skills.
  • Delivers core curriculum lessons that equip students to become positive members of their school and community.
  • Maintains appropriate confidential records on students in the assigned area.
  • Performs administrative duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned. These may be changed or modified from time to time.

Qualifications


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of academic advising and educational counseling principles, including course selection, graduation requirements, and college admissions processes.
  • Knowledge of career assessment tools, vocational training options, and job market trends to help students make informed career choices.
  • Sensitivity to cultural and diversity issues, including the ability to work with students from various backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with adolescent development, and understanding the unique needs and challenges of high school students.
  • Ability to listen actively, empathize with students' concerns, and provide appropriate guidance.
  • Ability to work effectively with all racial, ethnic, linguistic, disability, socioeconomic, and multicultural groups.
  • Ability to remain tactful, calm, and persuasive in controversial and confrontational situations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong autonomy, reliability, responsibility, dependability, and focus on excellent customer service
  • Ability to perform data entry and maintain records correctly.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Michigan School Guidance Counselor License, or a valid Michigan secondary teacher certificate with an endorsement in guidance and counseling is required.
  • Previous counseling experience, preferably in a high school setting.
  • Strong knowledge of Michigan's educational and graduation requirements.
  • Skilled in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Education and Student Information Systems.
  • Ability to travel in the performance of the job and duties are required.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Mental Demands: high workflow management, high project coordination, and high people engagement.
  • Finger Dexterity: primarily using the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together.
  • Talking: especially where one must convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly
  • Average Hearing: hearing average or typical conversations and receiving ordinary information.
  • Average Visual Abilities: normal acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents and operate office equipment.
  • Frequent multi-tasking, changing of task priorities, and repetitious exacting work required.
  • Prolonged period sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Working in a low to moderate noise environment with frequent deadline pressures.
