Contribute to the physical and emotional health of animals in our shelter and community by applying the principles of animal behavior as directed by the program manager. Implement training and enrichment plans for animals at the shelter and in foster care. Coordinate with Foster Coordinators to provide information and assistance to foster parents. Assist with training staff, volunteers, and foster parents to implement behavior plans.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
· Provide excellent customer service and communications to clients, coworkers, and volunteers.
· Implement training (behavior modification) and enrichment plans for shelter and foster animals as prescribed by the Animal Care Enrichment Supervisor and Foster and Behavior Programs Manager.
· Assist in training shelter staff and volunteers to implement behavior modification and enrichment plans.
· Assist in training shelter staff and volunteers on animal handling and shelter safety protocols.
· Assist Animal Care Enrichment Supervisor and Foster and Behavior Programs Manager with behavior observations.
· Evaluate new animals and devise an intake to placement plan for these animals with a goal of 72 hour placement.
· Coordinate with Community Support to provide advice and education to pet owners when needed.
· Perform data entry and keep accurate records on animal observations, notes, and interactions. Produce reports when requested.
· Help organize and oversee volunteers who are assisting with behavior plan implementation.
· Consult with and support foster parents to implement behavior plans for foster animals to help build confidence of fosters and their animals, and to promote successful placement.
· Assist with play groups. Aid in shelter playgroups and assist Animal Care Enrichment Supervisor with training staff and volunteers on playgroup protocols.
· Provide direct animal care – feeding, cleaning kennels and cages – when directed.
· Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
· Experience in animal related field preferably demonstrating behavior modification knowledge.
· Excellent customer service skills.
· Knowledge in animal health and well-being to include nutrition needs, resources for information, knowledge of common animal diseases.
· Must be available to work on weekends.
· Organized with excellent recordkeeping skills.
· Must pass background check and drug screening.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Minimum of high school diploma. Three years’ experience in animal related field.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must be able to read and interpret policies and procedures. Must be able to communicate effectively to adopters and must provide good customer services skills.
REASONING ABILITY
Must have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written or verbal form and to follow those instructions correctly.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, employee may be exposed to a kennel that is not air conditioned and may be exposed to unpleasant kennel smells.
