Li Cycle Corp is Hiring a Spoke HSE Manager Near Rochester, NY

The Spoke Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Manager will report to the Director, Health and Safety. This role will have a North American (NA) regional focus, providing HSE oversight and technical guidance to Li-Cycle NA Spoke production and warehouse operations in the United States (New York, Arizona and Alabama), as well as Ontario, Canada. The Spoke HSE Manager will also provide leadership and management of a team of Spoke HSE Specialists; collectively executing key HSE programs and systems needed to ensure safe and productive operations.
Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and management of HSE Specialist team supporting Spoke production and warehouse operations; including goals and objectives, active management of workload and priorities, periodic performance appraisals, compensation and promotion recommendations, training and development plans
  • Develop and execute key HSE programs, practices and systems across a wide range of operational topics to ensure safe work procedures and sustainable operations; achieving and maintaining compliance with company standards, as well as federal and state regulatory requirements
  • Build trust and relationships with operational leadership and other HSE practitioners throughout the organization
  • Lead HSE risk assessment processes in the workplace, including identification and update of workplace hazards and associated controls, to achieve HSE performance improvements and HSE KPIs. Develop and maintain updated HSE risk registers
  • Act as a Safety Leader and promote HSE leadership and engagement within the workforce
  • Conduct HSE Training Needs Assessment and tracking for workers, and oversee necessary HSE training, organization and control to meet the company's HSE performance goals
  • Ensure all relevant OSHA safety and health standards are met, and that the operation is compliant with the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act)
  • Integrate Li-Cycle’s HSE management systems (e.g. ISO 14001 and ISO 45001) into ongoing operations
  • Establish an assurance program and oversee programs for periodic inspections, documentation and response to corrective actions for workplace occupational H&S and Environmental requirements
  • Ensure all equipment and buildings owned or operated by the company comply with safety and fire regulations and any other Federal, Provincial/State and local regulations
  • Lead systems and performance reporting for incident investigation processes, including coaching and support for root cause analysis and tracking corrective actions to completion
  • Collaborate with HSEQ peers to implement programs, procedures and data collection for pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental management, conservation of resources and renewable energy
  • Promote and raise awareness of the impact of emerging HSE issues, whether legislated or best practices, on corporate, ethical and social responsibility
  • Monitor changes in occupational health and safety, and environmental legislation and best practice initiatives
  • Maintain compliance with existing permit conditions and legal requirements, document in obligations registers, and support strategic permitting and approvals processes, as needed
  • Undertake HSE data and metrics analysis and reporting, identifying key trends, and support development of our annual ESG Report
  • Additional projects and duties as assigned by management
Qualifications:
  • A degree or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, related field, or extensive industry experience in a HSE role (minimum 8 years)
  • Experience developing and leading HSE technical and professional staff, delivering services in a collaborative, cross-functional work environment, and across multiple jurisdictions
  • Professional certification(s) in health, safety and/or environmental disciplines highly desired (e.g. ASP/CSP, CIH, CHMM)
  • Experience in risk assessment processes, including identification of hazards, controls/risk mitigation, and environmental aspects
  • Functional expert in most health and safety disciplines; working knowledge of relevant federal and state standards with regard to industrial manufacturing operations and Hazardous Materials/Dangerous Goods Transportation
  • Working knowledge of workers compensation processes and return to work practices
  • A valid driver’s license and good driving record is necessary for this role
  • Strong communications skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to apply for a Canadian or US work permit to facilitate travel/work, as necessary
  • Computer proficiency with the Office 365 suite of services and IsoMetrix; prior experience with ERP software systems for procurement, training, and HSE data management desirable
  • Preference for experience with documentation development, program development and ISO management systems (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001)
Work Conditions:
  • Moderate travel required (30-50%); covering Li-Cycle locations in domestic US and cross-border travel with Canada
  • May be exposed to hazards associated with manufacturing
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required
