LGBT Network is Hiring a Program Specialist (F/T), Long Island Region - Western Suffolk/Nassau Near Hauppauge, NY

Position Summary

LGBT Network is seeking a full-time Program Specialist to provide education, outreach, and empowerment programs for LGBT youth on Long Island, primarily in Western Suffolk and Nassau County and at the organization’s centers Hauppauge and Bay Shore.

This position is responsible for three main functions: (1) Conducting anti-bullying/LGBT 101 trainings in schools; (2) Assisting students to start or grow GSA clubs; and (3) Conducting social and support programs that provide empowerment and build community. This position reports to the Director of Programs, Long Island Region.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Conducting Outreach

  • Conduct community and school-based outreach activities to identify and engage youth, including identifying new opportunities to connect and engage LGBT youth into programs.

Delivering Education Programs

  • Schedule and deliver anti-bullying/LGBT 101 trainings in schools and organizations.
  • Deliver education and leadership programs to GSA club student members.

Coordinating Youth Empowerment Programs

  • Facilitate Youth Empowerment Advisory Team (YEAT)
  • Coordinate GSA mixers for LGBT youth across Long Island, with a focus on Nassau/Western Suffolk
  • Assist middle and high school students to start, restart, and/or grow their Gender & Sexuality Alliance (GSA) clubs.
  • Promote and support school-based “days of action” such as LGBT Network’s Annual National Coming Out Day (NCOD) campaign.
  • Support leadership with developing educational programs and materials for the annual LGBT Youth Conference

Additional responsibilities

  • Collect and track program participant utilization and demographic data, including data management, compilation of program reports, and assistance with grant reports.
  • Field and respond to telephone, e-mail, digital, and other requests for referrals and support.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, education, social work, or other related field required.
  • 1 year of professional experience, with a preference for experience in a non-profit setting; school-based outreach and education programs; and/or working with LGBT youth (Work experience will be considered in lieu of education)
  • Strong knowledge of Positive Youth Development (PYD) and/or effective youth leadership skills; experience working with youth, especially LGBT youth, preferred.
  • Strong public speaking, presentation, and networking skills
  • Strong organizational skills, including event planning, with the ability to multi-task.
  • Passion and motivation to be a part of the LGBT Network movement to help LGBT people to be themselves, stay healthy, and change the world.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
  • People who represent the community being served are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Flexible work schedule is a must, as this position requires working after-school and evenings and some weekends for in-person events, services, and outreach activities.
  • Reliable public transportation and a valid driver license, as this position requires travel throughout Long Island, including Nassau, Western/Central Suffolk, and the East End.
  • Must provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination.

Compensation

$40,000 - $45,000, depending on education and experience

This is a one-year grant funded position through SAMHSA with the possibility of an extension.
